THE TYPES OF FRIENDS YOU’LL HAVE IN COLLEGE

The vinas you're destined to meet at uni

One of the best parts of college is meeting all the new and interesting people at your university.  Depending on your school size, you can be exposed to tens of thousands of new faces and potential new friends.  School can be isolating and lonely at first, but without a doubt you’re going to meet people that turn into some of the greatest friends you’ll ever have. Here are some common friends you’re destined to meet…

1. THE “ONLY IN CLASS” FRIEND

You sat next to them on the first day because you needed to sit somewhere but now y’all are besties!! But like, only in class.  You got their number the first day of class, but only text them when you need their notes.  You talk all throughout class, but go your separate ways the second you exit the room.  You’re not even friends on Facebook.  Should you add them? Will they think it’s weird? It’s not weird.  I’m gonna just do it.  Still not going to hang out with them outside of class though.

2.  THE “FRIENDS AT PARTIES ONLY” FRIEND

This person is so much fun to party with, but you’ve literally never interacted with them while sober.  This is the person that runs in similar circles as you, so you run into them whenever you go out.  You follow each other on Instagram, take selfies together, but don’t really remember each others names.  You’re both okay with ignoring each other on Monday, but acting like best friends again that Friday.   It’s one of the most steady and committed relationships you’ll have in college.

3. THE YOUNGER FRIEND

Inevitably, you’re going to have a class or two with some students who are a grade or two below you.  They have a lot more energy then you and are looking for a mentor and I guess thats me?  They don’t really know how college really works but they’re really trying and you end up taking them under your wing.  This may include, inviting them over to your parties, buying them beer, giving advice (that you’re totally making up because you’re just as lost), and making them feel super mature for having an older friend.  Having a younger friend feels a little bit like babysitting sometimes, but it’s also entertaining watching them try to figure stuff out.

4. THE “FINALLY AWAY FROM MY STRICT PARENTS” FRIEND

They grew up with basically the strict parents from Footloose and have never done anything.  They’ve never had a drink, they’ve never stayed out past 10, and their town thinks dancing is a sin.  Okay but seriously, this friend is a trip.  You’ll probably meet then freshman year and they’ll probably be your roommate.  The very first question they will ask you is “do you party?”with like, a weird giggle afterwards.  Like that’s a weird question to ask someone.  They’re gonna drag you out to parties and are only going to talk about how their parents were super strict.  They’re not really going to grow out of this throughout college.

5.  THE OVER ACHIEVER FRIEND

Somehow, this person is able to juggle classes, jobs, and a social life and still act sane.  Not only are they really smart, all their teachers love them and they know everyone on campus.  Every teacher in their department loves them, and they’re never seen alone.  Theres no doubt that they study hard for their classes, but it just all seems a little too easy for them.  This is a good friend to have because even though you might never as organized as they are, you will certainly try to be.
