HOW TO PUT THE BEST IN BEST FRIEND

Despite the saying, “friends come and go but family is forever,” there’s a reason BFF is short for best friend forever, not best family forever. Think of it like this–everyone has a soulmate, right? Well, that doesn’t just stop at significant others, spouses and partners. We all have people out there that are so close to our hearts and souls that they’re permanently a part of us. We all have them and they usually come in the form of best friends–the forever kind.

These friends are the ones we’d do anything for, our “ride-or-dies.” As best friends, we want more than anything for them to be happy, and whatever we can do to make that happen is one of our major priorities. Here are some ways to put the “best” in best friend and be the best vina you can be.

TRUTH ABOVE ALL

Everyone lies. Our parents, our family, our friends, strangers, everyone. Without a doubt, we’ve all lied to the ones we love, but it’s important that we adhere to the truth as much as we can in all situations. If we can’t be true to the ones we love then we are, in a sense, saying they aren’t worth it (and they definitely are). They love us no matter what, no conditions and no exceptions; lying isn’t needed and it isn’t worth it. We can fake it until we make it all we want to the amalgam of strangers that surround us, but for the ones we love we should bare all and trust that they will be there through thick and thin.

BE THEIR LIGHT IN THE DARK

Our best friends are the ones we rely on the most, besides our family and our significant others (maybe even more than those). We expect them as our best friends to pick us up when everything else is pushing us down. They’re our light in the dark, like a lighthouse calling us home from the abyss of the sea. If we expect anything from them we have to give just as much. Being a best friend is more than just knowing all of each other’s grossest habits and having inside jokes; it’s about supporting each other in the of ups and downs of life.

thought-catalog-635846-unsplash.jpg

ACCEPTANCE WITHOUT CONDITION

Empathy and compassion are what make us human, and we lend them most to those closest to us. Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days (sorry, not sorry for the Hannah Montana reference) and a best friend takes it all, the good and the bad, no matter what. We all have character flaws and they don’t only impact us; they can spread to our loved ones and affect them negatively. However, as William Faulkner wisely proposed, we don’t only love because, we also love despite. Those who love us most will love us despite our flaws. A best friend will always understand and always forgive. Sometimes we feel the need to judge others and project our sense of right and wrong onto them, but friendship doesn’t thrive when we try to control and change the other. If we accept the ones we love for their entire selves and forgive them no matter how screwed up things get, we inspire a love that will last a lifetime and forever after.

The most important thing to remember is that a relationship takes effort on both parts. It won’t always be easy, but if everything were easy, it wouldn’t be worth it. Finding your best friend and keeping them close is one of the most important things a person can do. Friends make life worth living and they’re more than worth the effort it takes to be the best friend you could be, day in and day out.

10 WAYS GOING GREEN SAVES YOU MONEY

So we all know the saying, “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” It was taught to all of us during elementary school and a few lucky schools also hosted “Green Week.” If you’re like me, you completely forgot the rules of recycling the next week. I honestly do try my best to recycle, but it’s just so confusing sometimes! Wait. . . you can’t recycle pizza boxes?? I have to flatten all of my Amazon boxes before recycling?

There’s just so many rules to recycling that it gets discouraging. I feel like I’m not making an impact on the waste crisis! Especially after learning about a pile of trash three times the size of TEXAS (!) just floating around in the ocean. But, since becoming a recent broke college student, I have come to realize that there are numerous ways that going green can save you a ton of money.

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER BARS

Bars of handmade soap on a platterFirst thing’s first: they last up to 80 to 100 washes! One bar is equivalent to three medium sized shampoo bottles and eliminates the need for plastic packaging, while still maintaining great quality. Lush Cosmetics sells great shampoo bars that are good for every hair type and are made with all natural products.

REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES

This is a simple one. Having a reusable water bottle saves so much plastic waste! You can find great (and inexpensive) bottles online that’ll keep your water cold for days. And while buying bottled water may sound cheap at $1-2 a bottle usually, that money adds up! So save the Earth, save some money and just get a reusable water bottle.

PAPER STRAWS

Straws. Who knew these little suckers could create such a huge impact on plastic waste! It’s great that Starbucks and a handful of restaurants decided to go straw-less, but a lot of damage has already been done to the environment. So, what you can to do to help is find bulk paper straws or inexpensive metal reusable straws and use those instead. Some straws include cleaners that keep your straw fresh and sanitary!

GOING DIGITAL

Going digital is a great way to save paper. Utility bills, rent, and magazines are all available to you online so you can cancel getting the paper versions. You can pay your bills or catch up on world news and celebrity gossip all at the convenience of going online and you’re saving the planet while you do it!

STAYCATIONS

Why spend money on plane tickets, gas, hotels, and car rentals when you can be a tourist in your own city? Not only will this save you money, but it will also eliminates potential carbon footprints. Plus, it’s always fun to explore new parts of your town.

TAKING BATHS

On the note of doing staycations, why not treat yourself to a bath? Baths actually use less water than showers do which also saves you money! Not to mention, baths are way more relaxing and soothing. Add some bubbles, candles, and wine and treat yourself!

THRIFT SHOPPING

There’s a good chance that you will find some awesome treasures if you go thrift shopping. Recycling, donating, or selling your clothes is a great alternative to throwing them out and having them end up in landfills. Another little clothing tip: an alternative way to recycle your old clothing is by making rags out of your old t-shirts. Instead of using paper towels to clean the kitchen, rags are a great alternative!

CLOTH DIAPERS

I know not every mom has the time to wash and clean cloth diapers and that disposable diapers are more convenient to most, but at least using a combination of both kinds helps the environment and saves you money. One cloth diaper a day is equivalent to 365 fewer disposables in landfills each year. Buying disposables add up to a big hole in the wallet too!

There are a lot of easy ways to save the environment as well as save your money. All you gotta do is think frugal, vina!

HOW CAN YOU GET LONG-TERM BENEFITS FROM YOUR FRIENDSHIPS?

Spending time with the people you love isn’t just enjoyable, it’s good for your health. According to The New York Times, your behavior and well-being, including anxiety and happiness levels, are impacted (strongly!) by those around you.

One way researchers are beginning to understand this concept is by examining blue zones, or areas of the planet where people have longer lifespans. In many of these areas, healthy relationships are extremely important.

With the oldest female life expectancy in the world, Okinawa, Japan is a prime example of a blue zone. In this area, people create moais, which are groups of five people who offer one another emotional, social, financial, and other kinds of support. Moais not only emphasize sharing and positivity, they also seem to improve health.

Dan Buettner, a National Geographic fellow who studies blue zones, is looking to bring moais to the United States. “We have created moais that are now several years old, and they are still exerting a healthy influence on members’ lives,” Buettner told The New York Times.

In addition, Buettner’s team has made it easy for people to optimize their previously-formed friendships. They have created a quiz that determines which friends might have the most positive impact. “Friends can exert a measurable and ongoing influence on your health behaviors in a way that a diet never can,” Buettner says.

hian-oliveira-614747-unsplash

So, form your own moai. Next time you’re with friends, make an effort to encourage sincere conversation and engage in activities that you all enjoy. As exemplified in Okinawa, finding a support system won’t just benefit you in the short-term — it could transform your long-term health, too.

10 WAYS TO BREAK THE ICE WITH YOUR VINA

It can be difficult to make a real connection with someone when you first meet them. It takes time, patience, and empathy to get to know a person on a deeper level. But when you’re able to easily break the ice with someone, you can start to build a meaningful friendship with your new vina instantly! Check out these tips to get beyond the surface level.

1. ASK OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS

Instead of just the run-of-the-mill, “how are you?” or  “what’s up?” questions, ask questions that go deeper and help you learn more about the person. Some suggestions are to ask about the pet in their profile picture, their cool sense of style, or anything they shared on their profile or in-person that catches your interest. Get to know them by asking what makes them who they are.

2. FIND SOMETHING IN COMMON

Read her bio, check out her Instagram page or see what communities she’s a part of on the Hey! VINA app and look for similarities that you share. When you find something you both have in common, it will make it much easier to connect on a deeper level and build a true friendship based on things you both enjoy.

3. LISTEN CLOSELY

With all of the distractions out there (I’m talking about you, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook), it can be difficult to give your full attention to your new vina. Respond to her messages, take interest in what she likes and listen closely to what she has to say. Being a good listener is a key quality in a good friend.

4. SUGGEST AN ACTIVITY YOU’LL BOTH ENJOY

If you saw an activity or hobby that she enjoyed, suggest doing this activity together. Whether it’s cooking, window shopping, or going to comedy shows, do something you and your vina can enjoy together.

elevate-755027-unsplash.jpg

5. SHARE SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOURSELF

Did you just get a new job? Earn a new certification or degree? Adopt a new pet? Whatever it is, tell your vina and she’ll get to know (and love!) the real you.

6. RECOMMEND SOMETHING USEFUL

Share your knowledge. Recommend a new yoga class, restaurant or book, and we are sure that your vina will be grateful for it. You may even find something in common this way. Hello, new yoga buddy!

7. SHOW INTEREST

Now, this sounds like an obvious one, but it can be often over-looked. Show that you’re interested in your vina by asking questions and really engaging in the conversation. Ask questions and do your best to remember her answers.

8. SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES

Did you recently go on an overseas trip, learn a new skill, or even something as simple as cooking a different breakfast meal for yourself? Tell your vina! She’ll most likely be interested in what you do for fun and how you keep yourself busy and entertained. If you have something to share that could benefit or interest her, don’t be shy! Tell her and watch your connection grow even stronger.

9. EXPRESS YOUR EMOTIONS

Loving the profile pic your vina has or obsessing over the fact that she loves matcha too? Tell her! Express your emotions of excitement, happiness, or even vulnerability to your new friend and you will automatically have a stronger connection.

lucas-lenzi-559739-unsplash.jpg

10. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF

Best for last! Be yourself and show your new vina what you’re all about. Chances are she’ll like you for you and you two will get to know each other authentically. Don’t hide anything, be open with who you are, and your vina will love you for you!

We taught you how to break the ice. Now it’s your turn to find your vinas!

LIFE GOALS TO HIT BEFORE 35!

We all think we have life figured out by the time we hit young adulthood, but in reality, there is still so much more for us to do and accomplish. Our twenties were just the beginning! Being almost 22-years-old myself, I understand the joy of being an adult but also know the stresses that comes along with it. I especially know that many will agree with me that the 30’s seems far away, but could creep up on us any minute! (Unless you are already in your 30’s of course, then you are looking towards 40.)

No matter where you are in life, here are a few totally doable goals to aim for before turning 35.

LIVE ON YOUR OWN

While it may be daunting, moving out on your own brings confidence and independence that simply cannot be achieved while living with parents or family.  Not only can you explore your interior design skills and preferences, but you can host vina nights and have more fun with your vinas than ever before because there is NO ONE to tell you that you can’t! Most importantly though when you live alone, you truly know yourself.

TRAVEL MORE

This is a goal that can be reached at any age, but it is best to travel while still in young and able. Not only are you more equipped to handle that jet lag a bit better, but you also have plenty of time and freedom to explore whenever, wherever. Travel lets you experience new cultures and lifestyles which learning more about yourself. Traveling can bring new cultural understanding, as well as giving the experience necessary to view the world through a pair of eyes that see more than your own culture.

steven-lewis-342-unsplash

BE FINANCIALLY STABLE

Many adults have trouble shaking the debt that they have accumulated over the years of their life, but it is a good goal to at least attempt to lessen student debt and loans by the time you reach 35. Even if the debt won’t budge, it is still possible to make sure that you have at least a monthly budget going along with a substantial emergency fund built up in case of any troubles. Part of being financially stable means that your budget allows for paying all of your bills as well as being able to put money into your savings (AKA emergency fund). This emergency fund would ideally have 2-3 months worth of rent, bills, and whatever other expenses you may need. If you can’t afford that, don’t worry because some money put away is better than none.

OTHER GOALS

Besides those three main goals, there are plenty more that you should strive for. These include having at least one adult relationship, being a mentor to someone in need of guidance, mastering home cooking, learning your body and it’s health needs and the list goes on. Don’t forget to have fun along the way! Life is an adventure–make the most of it!

No matter your goal or your age, there is always a vina waiting for you!

WHY DOGS ARE A VINA’S BEST FRIEND

Everyone has heard the phrase “diamonds are a girl’s best friend,” but anyone who believes that has never had a dog. Dogs are also not gender exclusive best friends. Sorry men, us women are also claiming dogs as our best friends now, too. Let’s count the reasons:

THEY WILL ALWAYS BE HAPPY TO SEE YOU

John Grogan (author of Marley & Me) once said: “Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.”

That saying sums up what it’s like to come home to a dog every day. No matter how long you’re at the office, how short your trip to the grocery store is or you simply walk into another room – your dog will always be happy to see you.

You can expect a tail-wagging welcome party, anytime and there is no better feeling than seeing your dog get excited to see you.

THEY ARE ALWAYS DOWN TO SNACK WITH YOU

Feeling guilty about that midnight snack? Don’t. Your dog is down to share just about anything that you’re eating – and even the most well behaved dogs will let you know.

Those puppy eyes work more often than not, so why not embrace it? Share your popcorn or the last bite of your sandwich. Your dog will thank you!

THEY CAN SENSE YOUR EMOTIONS

One of the best parts about having a dog is that they really are emotional support animals. Dogs can sense your emotions and will react accordingly.

If you’re sad, they become empathetic and will cuddle the sadness out of you. Dogs will also want to celebrate with you if you show them you’re excited.

roberto-nickson-g-661462-unsplash

THEY ARE HILARIOUS

If you’ve ever been around a dog, you know how absolutely hilarious they are. Dogs do the darndest things and the internet has taken to this and many dogs have become viral for their off behavior.

A dog may become internet famous or might just be a regular ole’ Goob. Whichever it is, dogs are a constant source of laughter and should be cherished for their hilarious behavior.

THEY ARE GREAT WINGMEN/WINGWOMEN

Ever pet a dog on the street or asked someone to pet their dog at a bar? Boom. Instant wingman or wingwoman!

Dogs are excellent conversation starters, if you have a dog or not. If you do and are trying to meet people, why not take your dog out to a dog-friendly bar or restaurant. If you don’t, you can approach people with dogs and use petting the dog as a way to introduce yourself. Most pet owners are thrilled to talk about their pets, so give it a try next time you’re out on a walk or at the dog park.

Did you know we have a dog-owner community on Hey! VINA? Join it and start making some puppy play dates!

HOW TO LIVE THE LIFE YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF

We know what you’re thinking: how to turn your dreams into reality might sound like a gimmick to some, but what if I told you that with a little bit of trust and belief, anyone can live their dreams? Yes, even you. Here’s how:

SHUT OFF ANY NEGATIVITY

There are people who will project their fears and failures on to you. Maybe deep down they’re afraid of your magnificence or maybe they truly fear the “what if” factor. Whatever is the case, you need to believe in yourself and trust in your journey.

DON’T LET FEAR GET IN THE WAY

To achieve the things we desire in life, we must not allow any fear in our way. Of course, we all have nerves and that voice in the back of our minds going, “but-but-but!” But no, no more buts! Let’s leave the butts for our curves and the possibilities open to the curves of our path. There will be obstacles and there will be times when we want to curl up into our comfort zone of a bed, however we must keep rising. The higher we rise, the closer we are to our dreams.

BELIEVE THAT THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON

The word “desire” comes from a Latin root (sidus) meaning “star.” Maybe our desires are stars guiding us from above? Maybe that’s why we so often hear the line, “Let go and let the universe guide you.” Our dreams and desires are a spiritual purpose.

IDENTIFY WHAT YOU WANT

What is your goal? What is your desire? Clarity comes from taking action and experience, so stop over-thinking and just go with it.

julia-caesar-15078-unsplash

VISUALIZE IT

Take a few minutes to visualize what your dream life looks like. Maybe it’s moving to Venice Beach, CA and selling your art on the boardwalk, or working your way up at your current position to the director position, or traveling the world, or maybe living the life you’ve always dreamt of means being happy.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself living your dream life:
-What does it look like?
-What does it feel like?

WRITE WHAT YOU SEE

If you’re up for a little project, create a vision board including images of your dream house, dream job, dream location. While visualizing your dream, what colors do you want surrounding you? Do you have a cat, a dog? Are you married or single? It’s important to be detailed-oriented during this exercise.

IF YOU CAN IMAGINE IT, YOU DESERVE TO LIVE IT!

What in your life is holding you back from living your dreams? Becoming aware of the energy that is holding you back will make it easier to move forward in your future. When we work on ourselves and our insecurities, it sets our minds up to thinking more positively about our lives and leaves little room for the “but” voice.

COMMITMENT

Are you ready to commit yourself to the manifestation of your dreams?! What needs to happen for you to reach your desired life?

Well, here we challenge you to commit to your dreams. Print below, sign it and add it your dream board.

****DREAM CONTRACT****

I COMMIT TO TRUSTING IN MY DESIRES, BELIEVING IN MY DREAMS, AND SAYING YES TO THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT LIE AHEAD.

SIGNATURE:__________________________  DATE:_________________

Let’s start this journey together, my ethereal vinas! Cheers to living our best lives!
