IMPRESS YOUR VINAS WITH THESE COCKTAIL-MAKING TIPS

Vina: bold, intelligent, badass. She’s the life of the party. She can mix a drink.

To help bring out that life-of-the-party vina that’s inside of you, I’ve compiled a tried-and-true list of cocktail-making tips so you can be that girl wherever you’ll be celebrating next.

Before I started following these five simple steps, not even my most beautiful glasses, stainless steel shakers, or a phone full of Pinterest recipes could save my drinks from coming out too strong, too sour, too much like juice, or too much like toxic waste. These tricks have helped me become more creative behind the bar and have given me a better understanding of how much alcohol each drink needs, all while keeping things simple, sweet, and cheap.

1. LESS IS MORE WHEN IT COMES TO INGREDIENTS

A good cocktail doesn’t need to be complicated. Many of the best cocktails have three or fewer ingredients. The important thing to know is what mixes well with what. Here are two of my favorite simple drinks that have less than three ingredients:

The Paloma: 1/4 cup of tequila, 1/4 cup grapefruit soda (like Fresca or Jarritos), served on the rocks with a lime wedge. Add a salted rim to feel like a real pro.

The Bellini: 2 ounces chilled fruit purée (traditionally peach), 3 ounces prosecco. Usually served in a champagne flute, start with the fruit puree on the bottom, then pour the prosecco over the top. Feel free to add a fragrant garnish to up your bar cred.

These and other gorgeous two-ingredient cocktails can be found at http://www.mydomaine.com/two-ingredient-cocktails

WHEN IN DOUBT, STICK TO THE CLASSICS

Who’s ever turned down a whiskey and Coke or vodka and soda? These drinks are well known for a reason and are simple to make. The best part about their simplicity is that it makes them easy to customize and dress up. Put your own original spin on any of the classics with fresh herbs, splashes of fruit juice, or even a simple lime or lemon to impress your vinas.

GET CREATIVE WITH FRESH FRUIT AND KOMBUCHA

When you’re drinking, you ’re probably not drinking for the health benefits (unless you’re one of those red-wine-with-dinner people). Still, it’s nice to mix up a fun drink that ’s light on guilt sometimes. Fresh fruit, kombucha, and even Perrier can make awesome additions to classic drinks. (HINT: The Real Food Dietitians suggest replacing the ginger beer in the classic Moscow Mule with kombucha and adding fresh ginger, mint, and cucumbers.)

CHEAT SHEETS ARE A VINA’S BEST FRIEND

Now that you have the inspiration, it ’s time to get technical. You don’t want to make your drinks too strong or watered down. To ensure that you pour just right every time, check out this amazing cheat sheet that explains the use of “parts” in drink recipes. You can always print it out and keep in your kitchen so you ’re ready for your next soirée.

USE THE TOOLS AVAILABLE

There are so many amazing resources where you can find easy drink recipes. Use them! There’s no shame in borrowing a few tips and tools from the pros. Here are two personal favorites:

Now that you know the tricks of the trade, I fully expect to see you giving back to the Vina community by hosting a meet and greet cocktail party with your new matches!

5 MOVIE DATES FOR YOU AND YOUR VINAS THIS VALENTINE’S DAY

If you’re single this Valentine’s day, don’t panic—we’ve got you. Just because you’re riding solo doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the benefits of the holiday. This #GalentinesDay, celebrate the love and friendship your vinas bring to your life with a movie night out, followed by a pizza-and-milkshake session to soak up each other’s awesomeness. Need some VINAspiration for the kick-ass women in your life? Shop our online store here, then check out the *must-see* movies hitting the big screen this February:

WHAT MEN WANT

First on the list is our girl Cookie Lyon in this remake of the 2000 film “What Women Want.” She plays Ali Davis, a successful sports agent who’s constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what more she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world, until she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts. With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she must go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest to the test.

HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U

Next is “Happy Death Day 2U,” the sequel of the 2017 movie “Happy Death Day” (make sure you’ve watched it, otherwise you’ll be a bit lost!) Starring Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Suraj Sharma, and Ruby Modine, the plot follows Tree, played by Rothe, as she unexpectedly re-enters the time loop and becomes determined to escape it after finding out her friends are now involved. When she discovers that Lori Spengler, the original killer, has been murdered, Tree must face the new killer in order to uncover their identity and break free of the time loop once and for all.

COLD PURSUIT

No list is complete without a revenge movie – and who does revenge better than the seasoned Liam Neeson? In “Cold Pursuit,” Snowplower Nelson Coxman (Neeson) seeks revenge against a drug cartel in his Rocky Mountains hometown after his son is murdered by the gang. It stars Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Emmy Rossum, and Tom Bateman.

FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY

This next one is a #GIRLPOWER comedy/drama. It is based on the life of Paige, a retired English professional WWE wrestler and actress. Paige is a two-time Divas Champion and was the inaugural NXT Women’s Champion in WWE’s developmental branch NXT, holding both championships concurrently at one time. “Fighting with My Family” follows the Bevis family, who are all professional wrestlers, as they try to work through the issues that arise when sister and brother duo, Paige and Zak, audition for roles in WWE.  It stars Florence Pugh, Jack Lowden, Nick Frost, Lena Headey, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Vince Vaughn.

Watch the trailer here.

THE TURNING

For all the horror-loving vinas, I found this one – “The Turning.”   The plot centers around a mysterious estate where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. She begins to believe the country mansion in which they reside is haunted by a ghost. I’ll be honest, the trailer scared the bewilderment out of me, and I am not so sure that I will be able to sit through the entire movie.  But I know my girls are tough as nails, amirite?

SURE-FIRE WAYS TO START BUILDING ROOTS IN A NEW CITY

Being thrown into a new place can be extremely scary. Think back to when you were the new vina in 2nd grade, or even when you were the newbie in the office. You don’t have much knowledge of where things are, what there is to do for fun, and chances are you may not even have anyone to grab coffee with! ☕️

Well fellow vinas, I have been there. Almost two years ago, my husband and I packed up all of our belongings in our first little home in Michigan and moved across the country to Alabama due to him receiving a promotion at work. I had to quit my job, say goodbye to all of my friends and, to top it all off, I was pregnant! So, that meant moving away from my family during a new and scary time of my life. I spent my hot, southern summer days sitting by the pool alone. After days on end of being lonely, I decided that it was time for me to branch out and make my mark in my new city.

Below are the five tips that helped me to build a support system, meet new friends and find a badass job all while being in a new city:

GET A JOB

I decided that I was going to change my whole career while I was here, and it was the best thing I’ve ever done! I went from a suit-and-heels banker to managing pilates studios. While at work, I got to meet like-minded people and engage in interesting conversations. I also got invited to tailgate, go to mommy sales and even got invited out to lunch. Plus having an extra paycheck doesn’t hurt either.💰

VOLUNTEER

Back in Michigan, I was under the impression that I had NO time to spare in my life. So my days usually consisted of work, exercise class and then sleeping. I’m not sure if it’s the southern sunshine, but I felt the urge while pregnant and working to volunteer, and I don’t regret my busy schedule for one second! Volunteering helped me to meet successful people in the community, attend upscale events, and I even met my workout buddy from volunteering. Besides meeting people, volunteering also helped to reduce my newbie anxiety by helping me to put my life into perspective. There are a lot people in the world who have larger challenges, so I knew that making roots was something that was achievable.

SET UP VINA DATES

Hello?! Why wouldn’t you use Hey! Vina to meet new friends? The app allows you to locate other vinas in your area and event set up events. I’ve set up walks in my area and even asked another vina on a wine night. 🥂

DON’T BE AFRAID TO JUMP IN

I used to be very shy when it came to casually inviting myself into other people’s plans, but not anymore! I’m not saying to be pushy, but if you overhear people talking about going to a concert, let them know you are interested, or if someone has a cute outfit on let that vina know, because when you have common ground it’s easier to make friendshipsand friends = coffee and wine sidekicks.

EXPLORE

Get out there, it’s a big universe! I would literally drive around different parts of the city to learn street names, restaurants and different attractions. This helped me to be able to make recommendations when I finally did get friends, so I always had the deets on all of the cool places to go. I knew the 411 on all of the hot spots for date night, and when my family and friends came to visit, I felt well adjusted and proud of my new home.

As I previously stated, being new can be hard work, but it doesn’t have to be! Use these five tips to start making roots in your new home ASAP! Home isn’t a place, it’s where your heart is.

LUSCIOUS LOCKS

To keep tresses hydrated, mix 1 tablespoon each of honey, castor oil and coconut oil with 1 tablespoon of egg. Mix well. Keep hair mask on for 30 minutes (or longer, max one hour). Rinse with cold water. Apply to scalp and hair 2 to 3 times a week. Pro tip: add a little lemon juice to your water in order to get rid of the excess oil and egg—leaving you with a beautiful glow. Shampoo as usual. A conditioner is usually not necessary after a mask that is this rich in oils. Not only does this help with soft, beautiful, bouncy hair, it also increases hair growth and repairs damage.

VIBRANT VISAGE

For the face, used ground coffee beans is an absolute saving grace. You can mix 1 tablespoon of coffee with the following to make your skin look and feel amazing:

  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil and 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2  teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon honey

Caffeine, as you know, wakes you up and does the same for tired skin.  Honey locks in moisture for bouncy, youthful-looking skin.  Coconut oil prevents premature aging, amongst other things.  Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin as well as doubles as an exfoliant.  The baking soda and honey combo act as a gentle exfoliant and moisturizing cleanser.

Another great one is cocoa, sugar and a drop of milk to turn it into a paste.  Apply generously to your face, leave on for about 10-15 minutes and rinse off with cold water. Pat your face dry with a towel. The antioxidants in cocoa help prevent premature aging by fighting free radicals.

If you suffer from dry skin, this is a great one, especially if it’s winter time.  Grate half of an unripe, firm avocado and mix a teaspoon of coconut oil in before you apply.  You can keep this on for a good 20 minutes if your skin is really dry.  Do this at night before bed and wipe off with a rag. Make sure not to rinse.

BODY TALK

For the body, make a quick and easy bath bomb by mixing 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup citric acid and 1/2 cup Epsom salts.  Then in a separate bowl, mix 1 teaspoon water, 2 teaspoons vanilla essence and 3 teaspoons coconut or olive oil.  Mix dry and wet ingredients and put into molds (cupcake pan works just as well).  Try one of your bath bombs immediately and let the rest dry.  Make sure to pair it with a nice wine and smooth music for a meditative session.

For the eyes, used rooibos tea bags are phenomenal. They soothe tired eyes and cool down any puffiness.  I usually dip them in icy cold milk right before I lay them on my eyes.  The insides can also be used as a scrub.  Mix it with honey and any essential oil you like to create the ultimate scrub.

What are you waiting for? Give your body the attention it deserves with these easy, home-made recipes!

FROM TEXT TO IRL: HOW TO MAKE YOUR VINA DATE HAPPEN

You swiped right, texted daily on the phone and are now eager to meet up and connect IRL. We’re talking vina dates here! It is a much more exciting process, subjectively speaking, to connect and make new friends, as sisterhood is so important. This should ease your nerves. But, in reality, this is still a nerve-racking moment. You are officially going to meet your vina in person. How do you go from texting to that first official date? Let this vina give you some tips!

LOCATION MATTERS

It is always essential to pick a date spot that allows you to connect with your vina. Do not pick someplace like the movies. Similar to any romantic date, conversation is key when trying to connect with someone. Humans bond with communication. This can allow you both to open up about your lives and see if there’s chemistry there. I would suggest finding a spot like a café, or a cool lunch spot, where you can relax and open up to one another. For thinking outside the box, think about going to a paint-and-sip or a nail date. The key is to pick a place that is open and doesn’t force you to be too distracted so you can pay attention to your vina. When presenting this idea to your new potential bestie, work with each other’s schedules. By now, conversations on the phone has allowed you to learn the basics: their location, occupation, age, etc. This will ease the scheduling process to get that first date in the books.

DON’T DILLYDALLY

You’re on Hey! VINA to meet new friends—and so are the other vinas. So what are you waiting for? It’s nice to send an introductory message and a few key facts about yourself and vice versa, but the fact of the matter is that friendships are made IRL. So bite the bullet and be the first one to ask your vina match out for a coffee date (or whatever your heart desires). Chances are they’ll be more than happy to; after all, that’s what they’re on there for.

BE YOURSELF

Once your vina accepts, then congratulations! My only advice from then on is to be yourself. Your authentic energy is what drew them to you in the first place. Go on that friend date with an open heart and mind. No matter the outcome, as long as you were yourself, then there is nothing to worry. As stated before, it is okay to be nervous. You want people to like you. You want that same chemistry you got from them over the phone.  Quality time is so essential to establishing friendships and maintaining them. The first date with your vina shouldn’t be seen as a hurdle, but a beautiful moment you can share with someone to connect and possibly build a long-lasting connection.

To any vinas out there getting ready for their first friend sesh: Take some deep breaths. Tell yourself that this is someone you have already connected with and that the same vibe will be felt in real life. Go on that date being your best self and let things organically flow. Know that you are worthy of a healthy, positive and beautiful friendship. You are enough, and the love and care you give as a friend are enough. The most important thing? Enjoy yourself and this new person in front of you—that’s the whole reason to do it.

May we all open ourselves to new, long-lasting and beautiful friendships in the new year and beyond!

Make that first date happen! Get on the Hey! VINA app today to connect with some kickass vinas.

5 FAMILY-FRIENDLY VINA DATES

If you’re on Hey! VINA (and if you’re not—what are you waiting for?!), you know that there’s already a thriving Working Moms and Stay at Home Moms communities. Next time you start texting with your new mama friends, why not plan a vina date…for the entire family?

Here are some ideas to get you started!

VISIT A MUSEUM

I know, I know, you may be rolling your eyes, but hear me out! First of all, it’s hot outside, so let’s play indoors! Many museums will have exhibits or play areas tailored to kids which will keep your littles occupied (and engaged) while you and your vina can chat. Museums are especially great if you’re worried about running out of things to talk about (been there!). You’ll be literally surrounded by topics if you feel the conversation lagging. Some museums even have their own cafés that will carry coffee, snacks, light meals, and beer and wine!

HIT UP AN ARCADE

Confession: this option is totally inspired by Stranger Things. Live up the nostalgia and let the littles go hog-wild at Dance Dance Revolution or Pacman. Get a little competitive and see who can win the most tickets or score the most points.

TRY AN INDOOR ACTIVITY

Challenge yourself and your littles to try something new (or revisit an old favorite). Whether you choose to slip on some super stylish bowling shoes, or strap-on some skates, your kiddos will be entertained and active.

sai-de-silva-27288-unsplash.jpg

VISIT YOUR LOCAL WATERING HOLE

No, I don’t mean take your kids to a bar. I mean an actual–natural or man-made–body of water. Pack a picnic, SPF, and water shoes, and bond in the great outdoors! Kids can splish splash while moms have a splash of rosé. This option is not only kid-friendly, but budget-friendly as well.

THINK FREE

Check out your area’s list of events. Maybe you want to stroll through the local farmer’s market and sample the goods while the kids check out the petting zoo. Maybe you can to swing by the Strawberry Festival and leave with a bushel of berries and a new friend (2nd vina date: make strawberry pies?). Whether it’s a tractor-pull or a summer concert series, check out what is going on in your area and you’ll find some unique and family-friendly events!

You have all the ideas, now find a vina to go with!

VINA DATE IDEAS: LONDON

Get lost in London on the vina date of your dreams….

GoBoat LONDON

Who said vina dates have to be limited to just two people?? Gather a group of like-minded vinas for a day-trip on the canal. Organising a picnic (or booze, we’re not judging) beforehand will certainly break the ice and navigating the canal itself is sure to make you all laugh! Even if you’re all locals – sometimes doing the touristy stuff can be super fun.

BRUNCH IT UP

Is there anything more beautifully basic than getting brunch together? Some local faves we love? Daisy Green Collection, Palm Vaults, or The Ned (just to name a few), where you can take cute Instagrams of your coffees and then explore the area together.

PERGOLA ON THE ROOF

Okay, so there are a ton of rooftop gardens in London but Pergola has a buzzing atmosphere that is sure to disguise any potentially awkward moments and with multiple food sources. And if you don’t have the same tastes as your vina, you can each get a bit of what you like! Win-win!

FANCY FRESH NAILS

While, shopping on a first date can be chaotic to say the least, getting your nails done together is a casual way to relax and chat all while being pampered! One of my faves for a fancy salon day is Barber & Parlour in Shoreditch.
