IF I COULD BE VINAS WITH ANY CELEB I WOULD CHOOSE – ANNA FARIS

When I thought about this question, the first person that came to mind was Beyonce. I must admit I felt intimidated just thinking of being Yonce’s BFF. I realized that what I value most in a friendship is reciprocation, first of all. I don’t wanna feel like I’m friends with a ghost. And secondly, availability. Let’s be honest, Yonce is a busy girl. And we both have small kids. It sounds practical but if it’s not gonna be work, it’s gonna be performing at Blue’s school. I’d spend more time with her as her assistant.

I thought about it and thought about it some more, and I was watching Overboard one Sunday afternoon and I thought, this girl is the ILLEST. Anna Faris is absolutely my favourite celeb in the world right now. She’s funny, quirky, and doesn’t try too hard. Plus her baby daddy is Chris Pratt, and who doesn’t want to hang out with Star-Lord every once in a while?

WHY WE WOULD WORK AS BFF’S:

We both have steady working hours, so we both kind of have an idea of when we would be working and when we will have time off. We would never be each other’s second choice.

She is absolutely hilarious.  She enjoys making people laugh, I enjoy laughing. Vina match made in heaven!

We share the same philosophy on life which is “Surround yourself with people that are loving and people that you love”. Out with negativity, in with love. That’s a thumbs up from me, Ms. Faris.

We’re both very chill. Her twitter feed (if you don’t follow her on twitter yet, make sure you do- @AnnaKFaris) is essentially a photo-mentary of her life. We definitely have the same idea about

She has a podcast called “Unqualified”!! It won the Shorty Award for best Podcast in 2017. She interviews celebrities and cultural figures and gives listeners relationship and other advice. I don’t have anything to say about how we’re the same here, I just wanted to give her some free publicity because I love her.

We are both moms so doing the mom run for each other would not be a problem – provided that we lived close to each other.

And to convince everyone that we are each other’s spirit animals, we both love cooking, we’re both short and we both have mom crushes on Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Bell!

WHY RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV

Charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. That is what is being served weekly on this superior reality show competition. The legendary RuPaul (who basically popularized the world of drag for millions of people) hosts this amazing showcase of performance artistry. It’s the most entertaining talent competition I have ever watched. If you want singing, dancing, acting, fashion design, makeup, and the very best drag queens, you’ve come to the right place. Get your life, hunty!

ICONIC SAYINGS

Soooo many of the phrases we use on social media originate from this show. “Throwing shade” (casting of aspersions)? “Come through” (an exciting exclamation)? “Busted” (ugly)? All from RPDG. These queens are just as original as they are sassy, and I wouldn’t change a single TV minute of it.

READING

The library is open! Reading is a staple component of RPDG, which consists of the girls pointing out each others’ flaws, either directly or indirectly. Vinas, some of the best moments from the show come from the queens critiquing each other. The drama and tensions run high, but so does the creativity, which results from trying to be the best to beat the opponent.

HERSTORY

Not only is this show entertaining, it serves facts on drag and LGBT culture and history. Drag is a pillar of the LGBT movement; I’ve learned a lot about drag icons and their challenges, as well as the queens themselves. They challenge gender norms and incorporate the culture into their outfits and makeup; it’s amazing and educational!

DRAG FAMILY

RuPaul says, “As drag queens, we get to choose our family.” Each queen that competes on the show is amazing in her own right, but the support between the girls is one of the primary reasons I watch. Even though it mostly seems like love/hate relationships between the contestants, as a viewer, you can feel the love and respect the contestants have for each other. RuPaul’s Drag Race still bringing families together!

YOU ALREADY KNOW IT, BUT AUBREY PLAZA IS THE COOLEST

Hey vina babes, are you a huge fan of deadpan-style comedy and Aubrey Plaza like myself? You’ve probably already seen her best work as April Ludgate, a college intern who regularly sleeps at her desk and hardly seems interested in doing her job, on Parks and Recreations.

Or maybe you’ve recently seen her in the The Little Hours trailer, where she plays a sex-crazed nun with GLOW actress Alison Brie and many other comedic names. Or there may be a few of you who don’t watch any television (including Netflix), or go to the movies so you’ve never heard of her… Whatever the case, her filmography resume is growing and she’s here to STAY AND SLAY! Here are a few reasons why it’s not too late to make her your lady crush.

SHE’S SARCASTIC AS F**K

Do you ever meet new people who don’t laugh at your meta layered jokes? Or you were faced with yet another weird confrontation in which you were faced with the “explain your joke” aftermath, causing you to rethink just when you persist with the constant deadpan-ness and irony, and when you should start simmering down a bit.

“Sarcasm is weird. Even not in acting, in life. I feel like ‘sarcastic’ is a word that people use to describe me sometimes so when I meet someone, it’s almost like they feel like they have to also be sarcastic, but it can sometimes just come off as mean if it’s not used in the right way,” said Plaza.

What makes her the ultimate eye candy for sarcastic vinas is that she’s the best at being herself (even if it confuses people). Her emotionless expressions are effortlessly charming.

SHE’S 420 FRIENDLY

In real life, she’s super laid back. Like super laid-back-cool. Like 420 friendly fun stuff with nuns cooool.

Need I say more?

*BONUS* Last year in July, she threw the first pitch at the Dodgers game! Athletic AND dresses up with face paint; what’s more to love than a fun, cute vina with a huge smile?!

Aubrey Plaza and her dope off-screen personality make her one of my favorite comedy goddesses (next to Gillian Jacobs and Anna Faris). Plaza carries herself naturally in interviews as if the equipment crew isn’t even there. As a deadpan vina myself, I look up to her, a strong actress in a male dominated industry. She will probably always peak my interest; saying little but maintaining that special effortless charm. She embodies one of those good kind of vinas that you definitely need in your life!

MINDY KALING IS KILLING IT AND WE LOVE IT

A friend once asked me which celebrities I’d pick to be my cabin crew on a wild night out like Rough Night. I was surprised that it took me so long to come up with the answer, but to be honest, the perfect vina date would definitely involve some food, laughs, gossip, petting puppies, and maybe even mild feigning of exercise. And that’s when it occurred to me that everything I’d want in a BFF already exists in the form of Mindy Kaling.

You may know Kaling from The Office, where she played the office gossip, Kelly Kapoor. Or maybe you know her as obstetrician Mindy Lahiri on her very own show The Mindy Project. This badass has also penned two highly devourable books: Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me? and Why Not Me?

P.S. both books make for amazing book club reads if you can wrangle some vinas around a fire pit on a summer night.

What I love most about Mindy is her openness about how hard she has worked to get to this point in her life. In her Why Not Meshe recounts her daily schedule and it is insane. She’s literally up before 5 A.M. every morning and her head doesn’t touch her pillow again until midnight. We all like a vina who knows how to hustle!

Another thing I love is her concept on life. In her own words, “entitlement in and of itself isn’t so bad. Entitlement is simply the belief that you deserve something. Which is great. The hard part is, you’d better make sure you deserve it.”

She’s also very upfront about her adorably nerdy childhood and the fact that she was always the unrebellious, perfectly polite pupil. Mindy attended Dartmouth College, became a nanny after graduation and eventually made her way into comedy after teaming up with a friend to create a two-woman show about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

At 24, she was hired as the only female writer on The Office and quickly won hearts onscreen by portraying Kelly Kapoor. She’s real life besties with B.J. Novack (Ryan on The Office), loathes juice cleanses and totally seems like the kind of vina who would cheer you on as you key your ex’s car, then she would promptly reward you with a trip to a Sprinkles ATM.

There’s a lot to love about Mindy Kaling. She’s hilarious, kind, supportive and driven. But I think the coolest thing about her is what a trailblazer she is. She’s one of very few female show runners in the entertainment industry. On top of that, she directs, writes and acts while simultaneously manning a very hilarious Twitter handle and hanging out on the New York Times best seller list. If Mindy was in Mean Girls, she’d be Glenn Coco for sure.

She has the most pleasantly amusing thoughts and insights, like which famous rom-com couples would still be together.

And of course, I couldn’t sign off without sharing some of my favorite quotes on friendship from Queen Mindy.

“The great thing about true best friends is that when you go MIA for a few months, they inquire but they don’t press. Best friends know the power of infatuation but also how quickly it dissipates. You just have to wait it out. And then afterward, tease them about it for decades.”

“One friend with whom you have a lot in common is better than three with whom you struggle to find things to talk about.”

DITTO! 5 IDEAS FOR SQUAD/BESTIE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

The best things in life come in two’s. Or three’s. Or rolling out as a traveling party. This season, coordinate with your mainstays and turn heads with the most creative and empowering Halloween costumes.

Ditch the pre-packaged cat suit. Make a vina date out of thrifting and crafting these squad costumes:

1. GOLDEN GIRLS

Friendship is forever. Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia taught us that. Party like it’s 1985 – as TV’s OG sister squad.

2. ALL THE BEYONCÉS IN THE FORMATION VIDEO

When life gives you the visual album Lemonade, your squad needs to turn that into a show-stopping group costume. You and your besties can’t go wrong with replicating Beyoncé’s most iconic looks from this viral phenom.

3. AN ALL-WOMAN SUPREME COURT

You might need to rock-paper-scissors over who will be Notorious R.G.B. (or add some flair as POTUS and FLOTUS), but this group concept is an easy one to plan on short notice. If your group splits up for the night, you can always pull off a Judge Judy.

4. ROSIE(S) THE RIVETER(S)

World War II opened up large-scale employment for women everywhere, so this group costume celebrates working women rising to the occasion and flexing gender identities. Also, who doesn’t love a good bandana up-do?

5. EMOJIS

We’re a little biased, but we think emojis, like girls, run the world. Perfect for big groups, make a statement and go as your signature emoji.

WHAT PARKS AND RECREATION TAUGHT ME ABOUT BEING A #BOSSLADY

If you aren’t familiar withParks and Recreation or Leslie Knope, played by the insanely talented Amy Poehler, then I highly suggest that you clear your evening schedule, have a seat, and start streaming. Not only is the series itself side-splitting hilarious, Leslie has also taught me the P’s and Q’s of being a straight-up #bosslady.

In any given episode, you can find Leslie:

Bucking the status quo and going after what she really wants. She is constantly trying to dismember the “good old boys club” and tackle patriarchy from inside the system. We all cried a tear of joy when she made it onto the City Council.

Dressing to impress. Leslie never shows up without the proper get-up to get her going.

Assuming responsibility and respecting accountability. Leslie has a cheeky and affective way of getting right to the heart of this issue. Because it’s not someone else’s problem, it’s already yours.

Keeping priorities in check.

Killing em’ with kindness. The best mode for communication is to always be the bigger person in any conflict. Being petty won’t get you anywhere.

Believing that a woman can do it all just as well. Just because it might feel like a man’s world doesn’t mean a woman can’t do it just as well (or even better). Leslie is constantly reminding us that she’s in a man’s world and that Parks and Recreation is typically a male-oriented profession. Sometimes, she works twice as hard to prove it, but prove it she always does.

Placing her best self forward. Nothing goes further than a good attitude. If you can keep a smile on your face, you can tackle anything, and you can inspire anyone around you to jump your (albeit insane) awesome bandwagon. Pull your self up by the bootstraps, and flex those smile lines.

Having big goals and big dreams. Do you remember that entire season she wanted to build a park and fill in that huge hole? She never gave up, no matter how crazy everyone else thought she was. Leslie was determined to see that hole filled in.

Supporting and celebrating her fellow women. Leslie Knope brought Galentine’s Day to the mainstream and reminded us that there’s no greater love than female friendships.

Leslie Knope is an inspiration to us all. We salute you.
