IF I COULD BE VINAS WITH ANY CELEB I WOULD CHOOSE – ANNA FARIS

When I thought about this question, the first person that came to mind was Beyonce. I must admit I felt intimidated just thinking of being Yonce’s BFF. I realized that what I value most in a friendship is reciprocation, first of all. I don’t wanna feel like I’m friends with a ghost. And secondly, availability. Let’s be honest, Yonce is a busy girl. And we both have small kids. It sounds practical but if it’s not gonna be work, it’s gonna be performing at Blue’s school. I’d spend more time with her as her assistant.

I thought about it and thought about it some more, and I was watching Overboard one Sunday afternoon and I thought, this girl is the ILLEST. Anna Faris is absolutely my favourite celeb in the world right now. She’s funny, quirky, and doesn’t try too hard. Plus her baby daddy is Chris Pratt, and who doesn’t want to hang out with Star-Lord every once in a while?

WHY WE WOULD WORK AS BFF’S:

We both have steady working hours, so we both kind of have an idea of when we would be working and when we will have time off. We would never be each other’s second choice.

She is absolutely hilarious.  She enjoys making people laugh, I enjoy laughing. Vina match made in heaven!

We share the same philosophy on life which is “Surround yourself with people that are loving and people that you love”. Out with negativity, in with love. That’s a thumbs up from me, Ms. Faris.

We’re both very chill. Her twitter feed (if you don’t follow her on twitter yet, make sure you do- @AnnaKFaris) is essentially a photo-mentary of her life. We definitely have the same idea about

She has a podcast called “Unqualified”!! It won the Shorty Award for best Podcast in 2017. She interviews celebrities and cultural figures and gives listeners relationship and other advice. I don’t have anything to say about how we’re the same here, I just wanted to give her some free publicity because I love her.

We are both moms so doing the mom run for each other would not be a problem – provided that we lived close to each other.

And to convince everyone that we are each other’s spirit animals, we both love cooking, we’re both short and we both have mom crushes on Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Bell!

ALL THE BEST THANKSGIVING EPISODES TO GET YOU IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

The best way to prepare for the holidays is to curl up with your vinas and hit play on the TV theme that brought us the most drama, laughs, and heartbreaks: Thanksgiving! Don’t know where to start? Here’s a list of the most iconic moments in holiday TV history.

And for any shows not listed, here’s a tip: the Thanksgiving episodes generally tend to fall on the 8th-11th episode of a season (mid-season, give or take), so if you’re wondering if your favorite show has any holiday spirit, now you know where to look first!

F.R.I.E.N.D.S

Friends is kind of the king of Thanksgiving episodes. With the exception of season 2 (which technically mentions Thanksgiving in episode 9, but barely) each season has a dedicated episode centering around what it’s like to celebrate a holiday with the 6 best friends that anyone could have.

Season 1 Episode 9: The one where underdog gets away

Season 3 Episode 9: The one with the football (return of the Geller cup)

Season 4 Episode 8: The one with Chandler in a box

Season 5 Episode 8: The one with all the Thanksgivings

Season 6 Episode 9: The one where Ross got high (the infamous half trifle half shepherds pie is created)

Season 7 Episode 8: The one where Chandler doesn’t like dogs (and Ross hates ice cream)

Season 8 Episode 9: The one with the rumor

Season 9 Episode 8: The one with Rachel’s other sister (crazy plate lady is born)

Season 10 Episode 8: The one with the late Thanksgiving

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Coming in at a close second to Friends in the Thanksgiving department, HIMYM gave us some pretty incredible holiday memorabilia. They feature a dedicated TG episode in 5 of the 9 seasons and none of them disappoint us even a little. Here are the top moments:

Season 1 Episode 9: Belly Full of Turkey

Season 3 Episode 9: Slapsgiving (the episode that gave us “You Just Got Slapped,” lyrical moment of the century)

Season 5 Episode 9: Slapsgiving 2: Revenge of the slaps

Season 6 Episode 10: Blitzgiving (the turturkeykey is invented)

Season 9 Episode 14: Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra

GOSSIP GIRL

Nobody serves up just desserts better than GG, especially if it’s Thanksgiving and someones checking into the Ostroff Center. Whether it’s a Van Der Woodsen inviting a “bump in,” or a Humphrey screwing everyone over, secrets will come out. Check out our top picks:

Season 1 Episode 9: Blair Waldorf must pie!

Season 2 Episode 11: The Magnificent Archibalds

Season 3 Episode 11: The Treasure of Serena Madre (the episode that gave us the greatest dinner scene in television history, and the most memorable 4 minutes: 19:34-23:11)

Season 6 Episode 8: It’s Really Complicated (the one where Nate punches Dan in the face…FINALLY)

NEW GIRL

Vinas, New Girl kind of came out of nowhere and unexpectedly gave us one of the most heartwarming and hilarious shows in television history. When it aired in 2011, I don’t think anybody had any idea that this show was going to produce 5 TG episodes that give Friends a run for its money. Ok, nobody can outdo Friends, we know, but this is a pretty good attempt.

Season 1 Episode 6: Thanksgiving (the one that gave us a play within a show, “Big Time”)

Season 2 Episode 8: Parents

Season 3 Episode 10: Thanksgiving III

Season 4 Episode 9: Thanksgiving IV (or otherwise known as “bangsgiving”)

Season 6 Episode 7: Last Thanksgiving

THE OC

It’s been 12 years and I think we’re all still crying about the ending of The OC. But in the haze of Chrismukkah, some of the most eventful TG moments got swept away. Yep, that’s right! The OC actually does have holiday episodes that don’t revolve around Seth Cohen’s made up (none the less iconic) celebration.

Season 1 Episode 11: The Homecoming

Season 4 Episode 3: The Cold Turkey

HONORABLE MENTIONS

While these shows don’t have a laundry list of Thanksgiving gold like the aforementioned, we think their holiday moments are still totally worth the watch.

One Tree Hill Season 8 Episode 9: Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace

90210 Season 4 Episode 10: Smoked Turkey

Pretty Little Liars Season 5 Episode 12: Taking This One to the Grave

The Office Season 7 Episode 9: WUPHF.com

Full House Season 1 Episode 9: The Miracle of Thanksgiving

The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 8: Fade Into You

LILIMAR Q&A: DEALING WITH FAKE FRIENDS IN HOLLYWOOD, WHAT SHE LOOKS FOR IN A VINA AND MORE!

The up-and-coming actress and an all-around cool girl Lilimar has had her fair share of friendship ups and downs. During VINAZINE’s exclusive interview with Lilimar, we talked about everything from the importance of childhood friends to her latest projects, plus how she manages to balance work and social life. Read some highlights below, vinas. We promise you’ll love her!

Q: Thanks for talking to VINAZINE! We’re all about friendship over here, and we’re wondering how you maneuver your friendships while living in the spotlight? Do you deal with fake friends or people using you for fame?
Lilimar: When I meet new people, I really like to get to know them and just really see their attitude, where their head is at, what they find important and what they don’t. If I don’t think they’re going to want me for anything other than, ‘Oh let’s take her picture so I can post it and get more followers’ than I don’t think it’s going to be a very productive friendship.

Q: That makes sense. So how have your friendships changed over the years?
Lilimar: I kinda grew up not forcing the mentality that I was going to have the same group of friends forever. But they’ll be there for maybe a couple of months or a couple of years, maybe they’re in your life to put you in a position to learn something from them since this person coming into your life will teach you some sort of lesson. Once I moved to LA, I would go back home and everyone was treating me different and asking the wrong questions. Out here, I’ve found more people who have the same kind of ideas and passion as me. You lose some and then you win some!

Q: What qualities do you look for in a vina?
Lilimar: For me, it’s not just about seeing each other every day and telling each other everything. Having respect for each other and finding someone who truly cares about you, and who’s there to uplift you is important. I feel like friends are there to be a big support system for each other, while at the same time having fun.

Q: So who is your best friend now, or do you have a couple?
Lilimar: Two of my best friends are Brady and Jaheem, who are also in the acting industry. And then I have more of a recent one who actually plays my best friend on the show I’m currently on, which is Savannah. We had all our scenes together and realized we’re practically the same person!

Q: What are your favorite things to do with your vinas?
Lilimar: It’s so hard because literally everybody here works or is in college, but we all like to hang out in pretty big groups. Every now and then, it’ll just be one-on-one and we’ll do something like hanging out at each other’s places, but most of the time, it’s five people or more and we’re just exploring LA.

Screen Shot 2018-10-21 at 9.28.39 PM.png

Q: What advice do you have for someone who’s looking to make new friends?
Lilimar: I know it’s very, very hard for some people to just go up and say ‘Hi’ to someone–it can be very nerve-wracking. But I think it’s really nice to hype yourself up every now and then and just say, ‘Hey, you should do it!” Obviously, you might not click immediately with that person, but the more you put yourself out there, people will see you as a person that they can come up to and talk to.

Q: Where do you see yourself going in the next five years?
Lilimar: I’m working on a show called “Knight Squad.” We’re all knights in training who go to school to train to be the next big knight of our kingdom, which is Astoria. My character is Sage–she’s a quirky charmer. She’s kind of like the black umbrella in the middle of a sea of rainbow umbrellas. We just got scripts for the second season, and shooting starts Oct. 29!

Thanks for talking to VINAZINE, Lilimar! Can’t wait to see all you accomplish in LA! Follow Lilimar’s advice and just say hi TODAY on Hey! VINA! Download now!

SEPTEMBER BOOK CLUB: NEW BOOKS YOU HAVE TO READ

It’s that time of year again where you begin to change things up in your wardrobe, swap your morning iced coffee for a pumpkin spice latte, and get in the groove of a whole new season that is upon us. Something else that is perfect to switch up at this time, too, is your bookshelf. With a new season comes new books! Here are some books that should be added to your must-read list this fall.

SEA PRAYER BY KHALED HOSSEINI

A short story inspired by the events of Alan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian refugee who drown in an attempt to reach safety–Khaled Hosseini made a tribute to those who lost their lives during the Syrian War and those families who were displaced and compelled to face the sea. A story of a father talking to his son before crossing the ocean, this tale will have you reflecting upon the ones you love and just how lucky you truly are.

WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU BY ARIEL KAPLAN

As the school year begins, it’s high stress time for those of you who finishing up high school and thinking about attending college in the upcoming year. And for those of you just starting post-secondary schooling, this one may be all too relatable. This is a story about Mischa, a straight-A student, who finds herself rejected from every school she applied to. Coping with the idea of trying your best (especially when you’re under pressure!), but still failing, may be the best coming of age story to read this month.

WHAT THE WOODS KEEP BY KATYA DE BECERRA

An intense page-turner full of mystery, fantasy and sci-fi, this whirlwind of a story will keep you captivated until the end. On her eighteenth birthday, Hayden inherits the home she grew up in, only on the basis that she must uncover the darkest secrets within it. Even though she has tried to cover it all up until this point in her life, it inevitably catches up to her.

WHEN: THE SCIENTIFIC SECRETS OF PERFECT TIMING BY DANIEL PINK

A treasure of a how-to book, Daniel Pink dives into ways we can improve our life at work and at home through the concept of time. For instance, did you know there’s an ideal time during the day to schedule surgery? Or that there is a good time to take a nap or coffee break to boost productivity? This is a great book for everyone, whether you’re beginning a new school year this month, starting a new project or just looking for ways to motivate yourself, this book gives you the ultimate tools to maximize your time and create a fresh start for yourself.

WHISKEY IN A TEACUP: WHAT GROWING UP IN THE SOUTH TAUGHT ME ABOUT LIFE, LOVE & BAKING BISCUITS BY REESE WITHERSPOON

Ever wonder what it would be like to be BFFs with Reese Witherspoon? Her part-lifestyle and part-cookbook can bring you just a little closer to that! A charming book about her Southern roots, it delves into how her heritage has shaped her into the woman we know today. From entertaining her guests to her grandmother’s most divine recipes, you can bring a bit of a Southern touch to you life. What, like, it’s hard?

WHY RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV

Charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. That is what is being served weekly on this superior reality show competition. The legendary RuPaul (who basically popularized the world of drag for millions of people) hosts this amazing showcase of performance artistry. It’s the most entertaining talent competition I have ever watched. If you want singing, dancing, acting, fashion design, makeup, and the very best drag queens, you’ve come to the right place. Get your life, hunty!

ICONIC SAYINGS

Soooo many of the phrases we use on social media originate from this show. “Throwing shade” (casting of aspersions)? “Come through” (an exciting exclamation)? “Busted” (ugly)? All from RPDG. These queens are just as original as they are sassy, and I wouldn’t change a single TV minute of it.

via Tumblr

READING

The library is open! Reading is a staple component of RPDG, which consists of the girls pointing out each others’ flaws, either directly or indirectly. Vinas, some of the best moments from the show come from the queens critiquing each other. The drama and tensions run high, but so does the creativity, which results from trying to be the best to beat the opponent.

HERSTORY

Not only is this show entertaining, it serves facts on drag and LGBT culture and history. Drag is a pillar of the LGBT movement; I’ve learned a lot about drag icons and their challenges, as well as the queens themselves. They challenge gender norms and incorporate the culture into their outfits and makeup; it’s amazing and educational!

DRAG FAMILY

RuPaul says, “As drag queens, we get to choose our family.” Each queen that competes on the show is amazing in her own right, but the support between the girls is one of the primary reasons I watch. Even though it mostly seems like love/hate relationships between the contestants, as a viewer, you can feel the love and respect the contestants have for each other. RuPaul’s Drag Race still bringing families together!
