It’s officially the month of Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut! Her film, Booksmart, starring Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever, is out on May 24th. It’s all about two best friends having one wild night before their senior year of high school ends, and it looks amazing. Wilde directed the film, and we’re so excited to see more female filmmakers shine! Watch the trailer here.

Gina Martin is an amazing UK-based activist who recently provoked change into making “upskirting” (the act of taking photos up someone’s skirt) a criminal offense. Martin is devoting her time to helping end abuse against women and minorities, and we applaud her.

When she was seventeen, Amika George founded a campaign to raise awareness to the amount of people who have to miss school because of their periods, called #FreePeriods. Anyone with a period knows that sanitary products are expensive — way more expensive than they need to be. Thanks to George and her mission, hospitals in England will provide free tampons and pads to menstruating people who need or ask for them!

The story of Erica Malunguinho is a pretty incredible one: she is the first trans woman to ever hold a state representative position in Sao Paulo, Brazil! She wants to use her position to fight for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and serves as a huge inspiration for those who hope to provoke change.

Tarana Burke, founder of the Me Too movement, was featured on the TIME 100 list with a profile by Gabrielle Union. In the past decade, Burke has dedicated huge amounts of time and energy to activism for sexual assault, particularly for Black survivors of sexual assault. It’s important to remember her name and mission when discusses Me Too, because not only is she the original founder, she brings awareness to uniquely Black experiences.

Not that you absolutely need a handful of reasons to ever plan a girls weekend, but the process alone can be daunting. When you get past the hard parts — like gathering your closest vinas, deciding where to go and setting a budget — the rest should be smooth sailing. In case you need a little nudge in the right direction, here are five reasons this spring is the perfect time to plan that long awaited, much needed girls weekend away!

Day-to-day life can get crazy, and it’s easy to lose contact with your friends during the week. So planning a girls weekend will make for a perfect opportunity to catch up with your vinas. Nothing is better than having time for long conversations about your goals, dreams, and what’s new with who. Part of getting together for the weekend with your best friends is all about the deep and meaningful conversations!

You work hard, and you deserve some time away from your job. There is so much bliss in having to do absolutely nothing, even if it’s just for a couple of days. Take a journal with you and record your mood on your mini-vacation. Share it with your vinas and reflect on how it compares to your mood during the week. You’ll see just how important it is to plan a weekend away once in awhile to unwind and relax!

Planning a girls weekend away this spring entails shopping trips and dining out. Maybe you’ll discover a favorite restaurant or even a tourist attraction. Discovery doesn’t stop there, though. A trip like this will allow you to experience new things and learn about yourself and the relationships with the ones around you!

Excitement is all around when you go away from home. Whether that be from the anticipation or from an activity on your trip. Regardless, even a few days away will satisfy your urge for adventure and fun!

The most important reason of all — the lasting memories you’ll make with your vinas. It will be a trip you never forget and you’ll forever be reminiscing about the wild adventures and amazing experiences’ you all shared. You’ll have pictures to look back on and smile upon great moments with your girl friends.

Looking for new ladies to take a girls trip with? Check out Hey! VINA and find some adventure-loving vinas today!

Summer is just around the corner. You might be prepping to go on vacation or book a weekend getaway before the warm months come to an end. If your period just so happens to land on your vacation time, read below for tips on how to manage symptoms or move your bleeding to a more convenient date or time. You’ll be hula-ing all your stress away in no time!

Did you know you can avoid getting your period during your vacation? There’s really no need for you to have a period every single month — or at all, actually. If you’re on the birth control pill, just skip the sugar pills/placebo week after you’ve finished the three lines of active pills and go straight into the next pack. If you’re on the ring, change it after 28-30 days (four weeks to a month) instead of taking it out at 21 days (three weeks), with one week without it and a week of bleeding.

If you want to skip your period indefinitely, just keep taking the active pills until you have breakthrough bleeding. When you get heavy spotting, come off the active pills or ring for five days to have a withdrawal bleed and pick up active pills again (or replace the ring) on the sixth day whether or not you’re still bleeding. You might have to do this at three months, then six months, then nine months, until the spotting stops, but it’ll be worth it. Each woman is different: some stop bleeding completely immediately.

Some people’s bodies have really strong internal hormones and may take awhile to get used to not having monthly bleeds or might need a stronger pill to take over their system to allow them to not bleed each month.

If you’ve ever been in the uncomfortable position of trying to be discreet on your way to the bathroom to change your tampon (though let’s face it, who has the patience or the need for that anymore?) you might have noticed that traditional tampons, which are 4 to 5 inches long, are just the opposite of that. The good news is some brands make pocket-sized, retractable tampons, like U by Kotex’s click tampons or Lola’s 100% organic compact tampons. And because they take up less space, you’ll be able to pack a larger quantity into your travel suitcase or your beach tote and not have to worry about running out.

For a longer stay, especially if you’ll have access to a washer machine, you might want to consider bringing along a couple pairs of period-friendly underwear, consider brands like Thinx, Dear Kate, Modi Bodi, or Panty Prop. These brands make underwear that can absorb as much as two tampons can and are made out of thin, breathable fabric that actually feel and look good. No obnoxious, visible panty lines or thick pads that bunch up this time — only pure vacation bliss.

We’re big proponents of redefining the term “bikini body” to mean healthy and happy. However, bloating is a common PMS symptom that can be very uncomfortable. This can put a damper on even the most self-confident among us.

Period-related bloating is caused by changes in your estrogen and progesterone which cause your body to retain more water and salt. For this reason, there’s no getting rid of it, but there are certain steps you can take to minimize other contributing factors. Mainly, avoid salty foods such as chips and canned soups, and if you eat out, ask the restaurant to lay low on the salt or soy sauce.

It may sound like we’re giving you a long list to check off before you can even begin to enjoy your vacation, but ultimately, this is a time to unwind and indulge. After all your preparing, you deserve to make the most of your vacation and treat yo self.

Go ahead and have a cocktail, if that’s what your heart desires. Ultimately, try to cut yourself and your body some slack. There’s no such thing as a perfect vacation, but with just a little planning, you won’t have to ride that crimson wave into your vacation.

What would a period-free summer look like to you? Sound off in the comments!

If all else fails, sometimes the classic movie and ice cream with your vinas is the move. Find your squad on Hey! VINA today!

Look, I truly will use any excuse to plan something with my vinas, so this month, my excuse is Earth Day! Here’s what the Earth Day website has to say about the festivities.

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a “national teach-in on the environment” to the national media; persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair, and recruited Denis Hayes from Harvard as national coordinator. Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land. April 22, falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, was selected as the date.

So get ready to get your hands dirty this Earth Day with your vinas by planning one of these eco-friendly activities:

Research any tree-planting non-profit organizations in your area and find out or even help them plan a tree-planter event for Earth Day.

Pack your vinas in the car and go to your nearest shopping center with a various home-ware stores — it’s time to give your kitchen a makeover with the main focus being to make your kitchen usage more sustainable e.g. buying recycle bins to replace your current dustbin.

If your vinas are close enough, start a walk club where you all walk together to the shop to do some grocery shopping instead of using the car.

Time to get your tan on and make a point of cleaning up your local beach while you’re at it. It’s not hard and your small act will make all the difference!

What are you planning to with your vinas this Earth day? If you need someone to make some awesome plans with, check out Hey! VINA today!

Mental health is still a tricky subject, and there are many people who still think that going to therapy is somehow shameful or something to hide. No way! Therapy and counseling are amazing resources that can be used to your advantage.

Here are just a few things to know about therapy, if you’ve been on the fence about using its resources.

Talk therapy can be incredibly beneficial when it comes to discussing your mental health or anything that’s on your mind. Sometimes, we have clear ideas of how we’re feeling in our head, but when we articulate it into words, it turns out that there’s a completely different reason for why we’re in a funk.

Sometimes you need someone completely removed from your life and from the subject that’s bothering you to give you some help. Outside perspectives allow you to see things in a way that maybe you wouldn’t have before, and it can be super helpful if you’re spending too much time in your head or you’re in a close relationship with someone that’s causing you problems.

One of the main things that therapists do is provide coping mechanisms so you can enact healthy ways of dealing with mental health hiccups (or even just a bad day) when you’re not in your therapist’s office. If you can use these coping mechanisms to your advantage, you’ll hopefully be able to learn more about yourself and what works for you.

Just talking to someone and having them provide legitimacy for whatever is bothering you can be a huge weight off your chest. Therapists or counselors will validate the fact that, yes, you’re going through something…and they’ll help you think of ways to combat those feelings.

Your therapist isn’t there to solve your problems; they are there to help you find ways to work through your problems so when they inevitably rear their head again, you’ll be prepared. It will take work on your part to enact healthy coping mechanisms and practice getting to know what works for you.

Here at Hey! VINA, we’re strong advocates of doing whatever you need to do to ensure that you are your best self.

Every girl needs her own group of super-women supporting her. As kids, we were friends with whoever was on the playground that day. But those same friends from the sandbox may not have stuck around as we started maturing, developing different interests, and meeting other people. We began to create friendships with people that were just like us, maybe unintentionally developing relationships with people in the same race, religion, culture, and gender as us. Having friends from different social groups and backgrounds is more important than you think.

You can learn something from everyone in your circle. Having diverse friends brings the opportunity to learn new languages, enhance your knowledge of different cultures and religions, and enables you to accept people for who they truly are!

Having diversity in your friendships also helps you to become more socially aware. You can never truly understand how someone else feels until you experience a connection with them. After connecting with a vina, I learned of her daily struggle of being a minority in her community. She confided in me that she felt uncomfortable in today’s political climate with her family being Mexican immigrants, explained that she didn’t receive the same amount of respect as other women in her town, and opened up to me about a social injustice that needed more attention. This motivated me to be more involved in my community and demand equality for ALL people. I never would have truly understood some of the problems thousands of people were facing if it weren’t for having her in my circle.

Finding new friends is simple with the Hey! VINA app! Check out all the different communities and get ready to meet tons of new vinas.

After the horrific terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Arndern made the pledge to immediately change New Zealand’s gun laws just six days after the attack. Fast action is key in these types of situations, and we applaud Arndern for making a decision that will prevent these attacks from happening again in the future.

Lesley Regan, one of the United Kingdom’s top gynocologists (who is also a professor!) has announced that she will be co-chairing a women’s health task force with government minister Jackie Doyle-Price. This aims to help women and girls receive the help and care they need — particularly with their reproductive health. In an article for The Guardian, she says, “In an ideal world, ‘an adolescent girl can go along to a well-woman clinic, facility or shop and she can access her smear, her contraceptive advice, she will get very simple, preferably infographic, information about what she needs to do to prepare herself to have safe sex and when she wants to get pregnant to have the best possible outcome for her pregnancy.'” Way to go, Dr. Regan!

Meghan Markle, now Duchess of Sussex since her marriage to Prince Harry last May, gave a powerful speech on International Women’s Day where she spoke about gender, feminism, and menstruation. It was her first public unscripted appearance since her wedding, and she spoke as openly as she could about the issues that she felt were pressing to women and girls everywhere. In an interview for the New York Times, journalist Anne McElvoy says in regard to Markle’s activism compared with the history of the royal family, “I think she has kind of moved the dial. I think the rewards now very clearly outweigh the risks.” We love to see Markle changing the norms and we hope she continues to do so!

March–the month of “Come in like a lion and go out like a lamb”–for sure lives up to that phrase the next 31 days, especially with Mercury stirring up for retrograde on March 5th. For those of you who are unsure, Mercury is the planet known to be the messenger, directing the ways we think, communicate and share information. Being the planet that’s closest to the Sun, this makes a whole lotta sense! And once this planet goes in retrograde, which she does three times a year for a good three weeks each time, communication, information and our thinking gets a little interrupted by universal forces! Just know, this month’s shenanigans aren’t totally your fault, but it’s for sure a time to reflect, be patient with your thoughts and words and take responsibility for the things we need to reconcile or grow from.

Here is a little guide on how to make it through:

april friendship horoscope zodiacs5

We know you’re eager to get your goals started, business agreements signed, keeping your eye open for a possible new love interest… but the time isn’t now to be impulsive with your wants. Instead, look back to last month–was there anything you started you haven’t finished? Are you idea-jumping and not staying solid with one goal? Are you ready for a commitment or are you looking to just have some fun? Be aware of needs, rather than desires. Reflect deeply on your emotions, instincts and spirituality this month.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs4

This could be a month full of misread actions and confused communications for you dear vina, but don’t fret! This is truly a time for you to use your grounding skills, think before you speak, appreciate the simple things you have and the wonderful people around you and practice concentration. March presents you with a month that is dedicated to your self-development and you should most definitely own it and commit 100% to that! Key words for you this month: opportunity, community, connections–don’t pass up any experiences that will get you closer to your goals.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs2

Things may seem a bit overwhelming for you this month, and with Mercury being your ruling planet, it could seem as though everything and everyone is conspiring against you, but know that everyone is dealing with communication dead-ends just like you, and like everyone else, you have the power to uplift and transform those chaotic energies! Don’t lose sight of who you are and don’t take things too personal. Express yourself the best way you can through writing, dance, the arts or just leaning on a good friend to help support you could be a wonderful remedy. Keywords: friendships, reputation, organization.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs

Not everyone is a mind reader or has the intuitive depth as you do, dear Cancer, so it’s up to you to put into words how you are truly feeling inside. Crave more time with your partner? Tell them. Don’t feel appreciated? Say it. Feeling a bit insecure? Talk to someone close about it and focus on communicating with inner clarity. By the end of the month, while others may be feeling a bit introverted, you might feel quite opposite, and crave company. This is a good time to head out on vina date with the vinas who support you and make you feel appreciated. Have fun and let loose! Key words: Clarity, insights, expression.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs3

Your creative ideas have been flourishing, but getting the ideas into action has been sort of an obstacle for you. With Mercury shaking things up in the communication realm, you might feel roadblock for your goals and creativity, but what most of us don’t realize is retrogrades are actually very beneficial for our growth. In fact, it’s especially a great time for us to get deep within, reflect and plan out your goal strategy. Remain self-assured, good things are coming! Key words: Transformation, attraction, projects.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs7

Obsessing over the little things, the big things, the faults of others, your irritations–this all must come to an end for the month of March. Dear Virgo, we know you mean well, but with your ruling planet heading into retrograde, there’s no point in throwing gas on the fire and have others misinterpret every word, your advice, opinions (or nitpick ;)) you say. Use that energy to head within–has your mind been feeling a bit chaotic or on overload? Letting go of the things that don’t include you (meaning taking on other’s issues) could be the best remedy for you this month. Key words: Partnerships, relationships, break free.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs10

You work so hard to keep the peace, and lately it seems like more of a job for you, Libra lady. Certain energies this month may interfere with your tranquil energies in your love life and relationships, but by remaining patient with yourself, it can help keep the balance. Remember to be there for your own needs! This retrograde might start out with a bit of chaos, so stay organized and double check career deliverables. Work on staying on top of your business and career this month. Key words: Self-care, routines, service to others.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs11

Energies are intense! You can feel it a mile away. Maybe it’s affecting you in your love life, career, friendships–but either way, be careful not to lash out on impulse because you will regret it later. This is a good time to slow down and take some private time to yourself. Maybe take a mental health day, a car ride through nature, a day full of Netflix and chill. Whatever it is, keep your energies balanced and focus on slowly pursuing your goals. No rush to the finish line! Key words: Creativity, sexuality, reflection.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs9

You might be craving some fun this month, whether that’s in the bedroom or out with your best vinas, and the universe is on your side with your desire! Hit the streets with your vinas or hit the sheets with some new positions with your partner. While others are juggling the obstacles of Mercury’s retrograde, you’re loving every minute of it! But what’s new? Sagittarius’ are always open to transforming and learning new things. So have fun this month and let your natural charm radiate. Key words: Empathy, pursuits, knowledge.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs8

You seem to be stirring the pot this month, anxious Capricorn! With your desire to show off at work, your need for extra attention and spice with your partner, plus your craving of something new–you may piss certain people off this month. Starting with your S.O. If you seem bored in your relationship, make some time for romance this week. Light some candles and remind yourself why you decided to be in this commitment. For our single Caps, around the 20th, you might have your eyes on a certain someone who could be a lifetime mate! Instead of boiling up your energy at work and causing some tension, head to the gym or a yoga class and start a new regimen. Key words: Intentions, romance, mindfulness.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs6

We know you love your alone time and while this is a great month to practice some solitude, remembering to balance out the time you give can also be beneficial. To our committed vinas in a relationship, remember to schedule some cuddle time with your partner, and to our single vinas, head to a coffee shop with an artistic friend to collab on some creative ideas! You’ll desire to delve into self-development or esoteric learnings, which will lead you into some emotional healing needs this month. Key words: Values, enlightenment, partnerships.

april friendship horoscope zodiacs12

Your spiritual side is calling this month and truthfully, it could be the best thing for you! As energies become intense, it best for you to focus on serenity and ways to keep your emotions balanced. You feel a need to deepen your understanding of yourself and the world, and the more time you spend focusing on this need, you might find your creativity is sparked! Remember to be mindful of other’s feelings. Being as sensitive you are, you might find you close yourself off to certain energies (which is okay, as boundaries are needed!), but remember to be there for those who love you and need you. Key words: Dream work, self-love, compassion.

Today is the 3 year anniversary of Hey! VINA’s debut on the App Store. I honestly can’t believe it’s been 3 years!! I’m so proud of how far we have come and how many lives we have touched. It all started with setting my heart on this goal 4 years ago, launching the app a year later, and the rest is history, I guess you could say!

I wake up feeling so lucky that I get to live my life purpose — connecting people — and combating the pain of my deepest fear — loneliness — and drive to help everyone (especially women) find equality. I know I showed up on this planet to help make us all feel more supported and connected and loved, so I thank you all for believing in me, my grit, my tenacity, my vision, and my dedication to building a world changing company.

I promise to never give up on you or me.

For fun and in honor of this milestone, I’m sharing an excerpt of some slides from our seed pitch deck that shows the story of the start of Hey! VINA.

Thank you to all the amazing support from our members, the VINA team past and present, friends, mentors, advisors, and investors for helping us get to where we are today.

Three years down, and a commitment to the next 100 years of VINA.
