I have learned many lessons in my twenty-something years of life. I have learned how to save money and how to spend it, how to enjoy my time out as well as my time in. But, the most important lesson of them all is the importance of skincare!  In my earlier years, I  could never quite get the hang of a skincare routine. I didn’t know which products to pick, what ingredients they contained and, most importantly, how to make them affordable. I started having adult breakouts and was discouraged with every product that I had tried so far. It wasn’t until I decided to try my hand at some DIY skincare recipes that my whole outlook changed. I started out making an exfoliating scrub to clear my skin.  Within days I noticed my skin appeared brighter and smoother and I felt more confident with my natural look.  Soon my kitchen was full of fruits, vegetables, oils and creams. Not only was I seeing results, but I had a new hobby!

Making your own skincare products to use in your daily routine has many benefits. The first benefit is knowing what is inside your products. Everyday cleansers and creams might contain some ingredients that are too harsh for your skin type or trigger negative reactions if you have severe allergies. Some have unknown ingredients or chemicals that are hard to pronounce. The best way to truly nurture your skin is to know what your putting on it, and making sure the ingredients are natural and fresh! Another benefit to DIY skincare is saving time and money. Most homemade products are created with items that can be found at your local grocery store or even your home. A final benefit of DIY skincare is allowing yourself to glow! Creating your own recipe is just as effective, if not more effective than using a store bought cleanser. Not only will you see results, but you will feel great too. Having clear, smooth skin is one of my favorite confidence boosters. I love showing off my fresh face after a homemade scrub to say, “Hey, I feel great about my skin and I’m proud of what I just used on it”.

I love DIY skincare and vinas everywhere can too.  Here are some of my favorite homemade skincare products for you to try:

The first scrub that I ever tried was an exfoliating charcoal scrub.  It moisturizes your face while cleaning out clogged pores.  It’s also super easy to make!

1/2 cup coconut oil

3 charcoal capsules

1 tbsp. baking soda

Directions:  First, liquify your coconut oil by melting it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.  Next, empty all three charcoal capsules into your oil. Finally, add in your baking soda and mix the ingredients until you have a smooth paste. Apply this to a freshly washed face, scrub it thoroughly or leave it on for 15 minutes as a mask and there you have it!

While we all try to stay fluent with facial products, it is also just as important to take care of the rest of your skin as well. This body scrub will exfoliate and moisturize you from head to toe.

1/2 cup coffee grounds

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup coconut oil

Directions: Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Use while in the shower by massaging the scrub onto dry skin areas. Store in a sealed container and use regularly for even exfoliation.

After a late night out you might be prone to puffy or dark under eye circles and wrinkles. Look awake with this easy DIY under eye treatment that you can make within minutes.

2 egg whites

5 drops of vitamin E essential oil

Directions: First, beat the egg whites until they become a frothy white substance. Once the egg whites are mixed, add in the drops of vitamin E. Using your fingers or a makeup brush, apply the mixture to the underneath of your eyes and leave on for 10 minutes.  Wash off and feel refreshed. (You can also cut cotton rounds in half and apply the mixture to the rounds. Easy under eye patches that you can keep in the refrigerator!)

The most important step to a brilliantly radiant face is moisturizer. You can apply it to a freshly washed face, as a makeup primer or just to have soft and smooth skin throughout the day. The benefits of moisturizer are endless.

Ingredients: 1 tbsp. coconut oil

10 drops of your favorite essential oil (I use lavender or tea tree oil)

1/4 tsp. vitamin E essential oil

1 tbsp. shea butter

Directions: First, mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Next you are going to use a double boiler to heat up and melt all of the ingredients until you have one unified liquid. Finally you are going to wait for the mixture to cool down. Once it is cooled you can transfer it to a storage container and use it as needed. An easy everyday facial moisturizer.

One of my all time favorite products is a rose infused facial mist. It is great for a refreshment on a hot day or for a skin boost on a busy day. This mist is perfect for on the go skin care.

1/2 tsp. vitamin E essential oil

2 drops geranium essential oil

2 drops geranium essential oil

4 tbsp. rose water

3tbsp. distilled or coconut water

Optional: 1 tsp. aloe vera

2 drops ylang ylang essential oil

Directions: Mix together all essential oils and rose water, then pour into empty and clean spray bottle. Shake the bottle with all the ingredients then top off with distilled water.  Coconut water can be added for extra moisture if preferred. Finally, use the face mist as needed and instantly feel refreshed, cooled and moisturized with this DIY face mist.

Everyone can agree Adele made an addition to the archives of girl power awards show speeches with her shout out to Beyoncé at the Grammys last week. So in anticipation for the Oscars, which airs on February 26, we’ve compiled a list of iconic, empowering acceptances from some of our faves.

Choking through her tears, which were entirely understandable as she was the first and only Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress 74 years (yes, you read that right) after they began, Berry says, “This moment is so much bigger than me. This moment is for … every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.” She had everyone welled up, including me in my room right now as I’m typing this. No shame.

What’s a guy doing on here? Well, Brando wasn’t the one to accept his award. In fact, he rejected the award entirely and sent Sacheen Littlefeather, an Apache woman, in his place. His reasoning for doing so was the mistreatment of Native Americans in Hollywood, a very prevalent issue that remains today. She stayed cool and calm as she delivered the speech, despite the booing from the audience. Plus, she looked totally gorgeous in her traditional Apache dress. Talk about bad a**.

After complimenting every other actress who had been nominated for her award like the classy lady that she is, Bullock gave a shout out to all the mamas who have taken children into their homes regardless of their backgrounds. She finished up by thanking her own mother for “reminding her daughters that there is no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love.” Now that’s mothering done right.

It’s no secret that the glass ceiling in Hollywood is still a very real thing, and this can partially be attributed to the myth that female movies don’t make as much money as those starring males. In her speech, Cate Blanchett threw some serious shade to “those of us in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films with women at the center are niche experiences. They are not … And, in fact, they earn money. The world is round, people!” Cate, you’re my GALileo.

Okay, maybe I’m biased because Clarice Starling is my favorite female character of all time, but Jodie Foster seriously slayed this. At the end of her speech, which I have a really hard time believing she made up on the spot because it was that freakin’ good, she says, “I’d like to thank the academy for embracing such an incredibly strong and feminist hero that I am so proud of. Thank you very much.” The only thing that could’ve made this more flawless is if she’d said the speech in Clarice’s phony West Virginia accent.

What would you say in your Oscars acceptance speech? Let us know in the comments!

Welcome, lovelies, to the first installment of our new reading corner, a space to share and celebrate the written work of badass women.

There are few things I love more than reading in this life, and the strange magic that comes with it. There’s something special about an activity that makes you brighter, better, and smarter while laying down. I’m interested in books that stretch the imagination, probe at your most intricate life questions, and rattle you to the bone with language.

I will  be introducing two books every month. Some books will be new, some will be old and forgotten, some short stories, some novels, and nonfiction for good measure. These are my little gifts to you, books that have made me a bigger person, a more particular person, a more loving and aware person; as I think a good book should. I hope you will find love, solace, ache, and laughter in every single one of them.

This is Watkins’ first novel, and it’s dripping with everything I go looking for in a book. I have to admit I went in expecting a lot. I’d read her collection of short stories, “Battleborn,” while I was in grad school and I was swooning. She tapped into a part of my imagination and vocabulary that was too glorious to allow myself to be envious. I was just thankful.

“Gold Fame Citrus” is set in a hypothetical near future of a waterless west California that has sucked everything else dry. In this world, we meet Luz and her boyfriend Ray who are squatting in a mansion in Laurel Canyon. They acquire a child (I won’t tell you how), and they go off in search of a better life. ( BTW– that’s not a spoiler because it says all of that on the jacket but I can’t speak beyond those details. I hate when you watch a movie trailer and you feel like you’ve seen the whole film.)

You will get lost in the strangeness of the world, taste the dry heat while you lie in your bed, and have a hard time not staying up all night turning those pages. And then, if you love her words like I do, circle back and read her stories in Battleborn.

While this might be a classic to some of us, others, who have never had the pleasure of reading Didion yet, are in for a treat. I take it as one of my life duties to push Didion onto everyone that will listen for a moment, and here you are, listening.

While there are many many of her essays and books that I will bring up as we go on, this is the one I want to recommend you start with, this was my introduction to her and it sets your palate for her work: it teaches you how to read her, and it makes you understand that her territory is as vast as it is dynamic. She is a master of language and a thinker like none other.

This collection of essays wanders through her journalistic based pieces, her life in Sacramento, and her think tanks on living life as a writer. My personal favorite is “On Keeping A Notebook.” It’s near the later half of the collection and by the time you get there, you’ll be in love like I am.

There is nothing quite like reading a good book for the first time. Please come on back and leave us some thoughts as you are reading. I would love to turn this into a space for us to chat about the books, these incredible writers, and the dimension they are bringing into your life. Happy reading lovelies!

Mmm beer… isn’t it just the best? Whether you chug, chug, chug a few at the pub or kick back on the couch with a cold one, the beer you drink says more about you than you’d think. Here’s our super scientific low-down of what your favorite beer reveals about you!

You, my porter drinker, are a classy lady. Much like the history of porter beer, you’re a bit mysterious, and kind of hard to figure out. You’re not the loud and rowdy patron, but the low-key, always polite, generous tipper that bartenders love! While you may come off as a wallflower sometimes for being quiet and thoughtful, you are totally comfortable in your skin. You definitely give your group of friends a warm and inviting vibe, which is why every vina needs a friend like you! vinapicloveofbeer

Pilsner enthusiast, you are the bubbly, light-hearted life of the party. You can definitely throw back a few and keep up at a bar crawl. Old-school at heart, you make the best wing woman because you know what’s good for your vinas, and you know a good time! Your energy is bright and contagious, so bartenders love you for just supplying the good vibes!

Aaah the wheat beer drinker. You, my friend are the bad*** that everyone loves. You definitely ain’t gluten-free, and honestly, don’t care if anyone is. You’re just as happy at home chillin’ as you are in a big group at the bar. You’re the easy-going chick that everyone wants to hang with!

Stout fiend, you are the laid-back vina who gives the best advice–which is why all your friends love you. Even though you’re always down for a good time, whether it be dancing or a concert, you’re happiest kickin’ it at chill bar or even better, at home. Much like the flavor of a Stout, your friendship is strong and comforting.

via @hyunny94

IPA lover, you are the cool, confident BFF BVF (best vina forever) that everyone needs. Definitely down for a good time at the bar, you’re the vina to find at the local craft beer spot with a big group of friends, generally in the middle of the conversation. You’re the social butterfly that everyone knows and loves; for real, you’re incredibly likable–perhaps because you know your sh*t and can really hold a great conversation without dominating it. Don’t be surprised if you get caught up in deep convo with your bartender!

Speaking of conversation, sour addict, you love a good, long, profound convo. TBH you may come off as a little bit of a know-it-all, but that’s because you do know it all! At least when it comes to sours, you’re very well-versed in the world of sour beer. But you’re also the vina that just knows all the happenings of the world! You’re the one with all the great recs when it comes to books, music, and style. You are the cultured vina that every group needs. Plus, you’re most likely a foodie, so everybody’s always asking you what hot brunch spots to try!

And there you have it, vinas! Now you know what your favorite beer says about you! Cheers!

Which beer is your favorite? Tell us in the comments below, and make sure to check out Hey! VINA to find your beer squad!

There is something magnetic about watching a woman take the stage. Among my favorite and iconic women like Joni Mitchell, Patsy Cline, Allison Kraus, and Stevie Nicks, there are many fresh faces that are taking the country and world by storm on big tours, small tours, solo tours this spring. My best advice for you is to find which venues near you regularly host touring musicians- and not just the big ones. Stop by local coffee shops and see if they’re planning any small sets, sit in on open mic night, and show up for some unexpected and often times much needed new music in your life. Listen to the folk anthems below, and try to see some live if you get the chance!

She’s touring in the US this year- sounds like Gillian Welch and takes up the whole room with a voice so lovely it just might bring you to tears while you dance until the sun comes up.

This beauty has a new album, My Piece of Land, out now and is taking to the road with it, in the US,  Sweden, the UK, and back through Canada all before summertime. Catch her while you can.

There’s nothing more bewitching than watching this LA based maven  on stage. She’s got all the charisma of Stevie Nicks with a voice that will put you in a heavenly trance. Fall in love with her folky surf rock and eclectic style.

That’s right- the queen herself is on tour early this year all over the US through April before she goes over seas. As far as bucket list concerts go, this is at the top of my list.

Yes, another legend. My mom used to always play Bonnie Raitt tapes in the living room when I was growing up- there are few things that bring me more joy than the sound of her voice. Get tickets before they’re gone.

Looking to jam out while you chill out? Angel Olsen is great- with a classic undertone mixed with modern messages and beautiful imagery, you are sure to spend an afternoon submerged in your feelings. Give her a listen, and try to make it to a show! But beware- tickets sell out fast!

Round up your vinas and hit the road to see these living lady legends live! Know of other talented women taking the stage this year? Let us know in the comments!

We’ve all heard the saying, “You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friend’s nose.” And, yeah, maybe we don’t take it that far, but we all do some pretty weird sh*t with our bestie because they’re just that, our bestie. And if we’re not going to do it with them then who else? Here’s a list of all the totally wack stuff you (most likely) do with your vinas:

If you recoiled at this, then I hate to break it to you, but you’re in the minority. Sometimes you’ve got a pimple on the hard-to-reach part of your back, and you need your right hand’s extra set of hands. No shame.giphy (1).gif

What’s better than an ugly Snapchat of your vina? An ugly Snapchat of your vina on the toilet. Nothing like laughing at your Number 1 while she goes Number 1. Don’t forget to screenshot!

You’re lying if you say you haven’t reached into your roomie’s drawer for a pair of undies after you skipped laundry day one too many times. From secrets to G-strings, besties share everything.

Does your breath smell? Your bestie will check. Is there blood on your pants? Your bestie will check. Does your hair look greasy at the crown? Your bestie will check. Do you have food in your teeth? Your bestie will check. You get the picture.

Whether you’re drunkenly stuffed in a stall peeing together or vying for the title of loudest burper after chugging a soda, you really have no qualms when it comes to your bestie. Friends who fart together stay together. Isn’t that what they say?

Think we missed a few? Let us know what gross stuff you and your gals do.

After the party, there’s the after party, and after that — well, what do you do when it’s after midnight, but you and your vinas still want to hang out? Here are some cool ideas to keep the party going well after you’ve left the party.

Pick a theme for the night: Are you feeling 80’s or 90’s teen comedies? Maybe the mood of the night is Jennifer and you just gush over Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston films? Or are you looking to binge a new show? Get creative with it! Whatever it is, make sure to stop at the nearest 24-hour store and stock up on snacks before retiring to your place for a vinas night in!

You can never go wrong with game night! It’s a simple guaranteed fun night in. Make it nostalgic by digging deep into your closet for *Nsync Backstage or Fib Finder, but make it grown up with a bottle of wine!

Find a well lit path or park and go for a nice late-night walk. It’s inexpensive, it’s laid back and it gives you both a chance to get to know one another. Play game of Two Truths and a Lie to make it fun and silly.

Grab your camera or the nearest camera phone, and make your night memorable by recording as you walk through downtown. Make an adventure of it and take turns interviewing one another. The video could make for a very cute memory or a viral sensation, you never know!

This one might require prior planning but is definitely worth the work! Develop a short list of things to look for and on nights when you are bored out of your minds, seek them out on a little adventure. Maybe you have to find a stranger that is 6 ft. 2 and wearing a red shirt? It can make an ordinary night super fun and memorable!

These never get old no matter how old we get. Grab your favorite vinas and engage in your favorite sleepover rituals like spa night, make-overs, or just talking all night! A sleepover is a wonderful after-hours vina date to really get to know each other!

Which after-hours vina date will you choose? Tell us in the comments!

While there are plenty of ways to show your love and appreciation for your Vinas, one go-to way is a little classic gift-giving. Everyone loves to open something sweet, especially when it’s well chosen for her one-of-a-kind personality. So, this is our Galentine’s Day gift round up for all those artsy babes in your life. You know, the one who likes to collage and draw and seems to always be making something new. Whatever her crafty taste and whatever your gifting style might be we’ve got the artsy gift for your fave vina.

Get one of her prints printed, for only twenty dollars. It’s done in two-tone black and white ink on paper with a printer generally used by engineers for architectural work. They’ve got this minimalist feel with a large scale effect, and make a great gift.

52 week journal for all those projects in life. Those artsy creative vinas are often so overflowing with amazing ideas that it’s hard to keep track of the to-do’s. This is the perfect place for her to keep tabs on that creative lifestyle.

Gel Pens. Remember these from Junior High? Well they’re just as amazing as ever and light up everything from her afternoon coloring, to her work to-do list, to her next great master piece.

Brighten up her living room with this rainbow wall hang from Urban Outfitters that is as colorful as she is. The room she creates in should be set for magic, and this fun little piece will get all the artsy vibes flowing.

Doodle Crate is a monthly box subscription for arts and crafts where every month you get a re-up on your crafternooning. They send you all the materials, an inspiration sheet, a video tutorial, and instructions. The two of you can enjoy this together every month!!

Coloring books have been all there rage in last year or so, they help chill you out and channel your creative side. Of all the wonderful ones that are on the market, this Vogue one is one of our favorites. Vintage Vogue layouts and covers that you can color in and gather inspiration while you do it.
