For all you SoCal babes, boy do we have a treat for you! Since we know sometimes it can be hard to come up with something cool to do for your first Hey! Vina date, we did a little bit of research and rounded up some just for you. Check out our suggestions and comment your own ideas below!

With multiple, adorable, San Diego locations, Better Buzzed Coffee is the perfect place to meet up for a cup 0′ joe. This small-batch coffee roaster knows good beans, so grab a mug and your phone (trust us, you’re going to want to Instagram in here) and get to know your vina!

The sushi burrito has finally made its way to San Diego, and we couldn’t be happier. For when you’re craving sushi but want it to be more convenient and on-the-go, try Rolled Up in Hillcrest. Mmm…😋🍣.

Pretttttty… (via Lion’s Share)

Okay, we’ll admit it, The Lion’s Share is a weird place. It leans hipster, sort of swanky and sort of out-there, but it’s also not pretentious, which is why it made our list. If you’re looking for somewhere different from your average dive, this is the place to go. And, if you’re feeling a little adventurous, maybe give the Antelope Sliders 🍔 a try and let us know how they are.

For all you adventurous vinas out there, the Sunny Jim Cave Store in La Jolla might just be the place for you. This beachfront store might seem like any other oceanside boutique, but it is secretly the doorway into a hidden sea cave. Get a dose of adventure and history with your vina! It’s the only sea cave in California that’s accessible by land, and local history claims that it was once used to smuggle alcohol into the city during Prohibition.

These vinas know how to celebrate a birthday (via @luchalibretacoshop).

In all its gimicky goodness, Lucha Libre Tacos is the perfect place to grab a bite with your new vina. Mexican wrestling (aka lucha libre) paraphernalia adorns every inch of this taco joint, and you can even eat at their gold “table of champions” inside a make-shift wrestling rink. Plus, the food is well-suited for champions!

Menaka was one of the lovely San Francisco vinas to participate in our photoshoots last week, and she’s basically our new Canadian bestie. We love her bright personality, her zest for life, and her rad personal style. After the photoshoot, we had a chance to get to know her a little better – now you can, too!

Hey Menaka! Introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Menaka Iyer. I’m the ripe age of 24, and I am a celestial damsel at the moment as I am transitioning from my previous career of teaching preschool and music.

How did you hear about Hey! Vina?

I heard about Hey! Vina through my one of my co-teachers at the preschool. She had mentioned that she went on some awesome friendship dates. It sounded like so much fun!

What has been your fave vina date so far?

My favourite vina date has been rock climbing with coffee and Thai to end it with a yummy bang.

What 5 emojis best describe you?

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is eating doughnuts in bed while absorbing the magic of Disney!

What is your favorite thing about yourself?

My favourite thing about myself is my ability to make new friends.

Can’t get enough of Menaka? Check our new vina babe out on her blog at or say Hey! on Twitter.

If you ever notice an uncommonly large group of Millennial vinas on their phones in a public space at an odd hour, chances are they are playing Pokémon Go. Pokémon Go is the augmented reality app that allows you to “catch ‘em all” (Pokémon) as you move about the world IRL. Since the only way to find new varieties of Pokémon is to actually go out and walk to places of interest, this hot new app is giving us another way to get active and an opportunity to meet new vinas.

Here are three ways to catch ‘em all while catching a sweat with a friend:

Aside from Pokémon, you can find a good assortment of goodies at every Pokéstop, including eggs. Eggs contain both common and rare Pokemon, but can only be incubated and hatched when you walk a certain number of kilometers. Plan a vina date around incubating your 10km eggs together. You can even name your hatched Pokémon after each other!

If you have a favorite route with the maximum amount of Pokéstops in your neighborhood, share the journey with a vina. After a brisk walk, be sure to stop the ice cream parlor that doubles as a Pokémon gym. #TreatYourselves

One of the best parts of Pokémon Go is that you can take a picture of your catch with AR screenshots. Have fun practicing your yoga form by snapping your sun salutations next to Pikachu. Tap into your inner child’s pose!

Can’t get enough of catching ’em all? Share your favorite Pokémon Go tips!

Out of all our Beantown vinas, Dima has to be the baddest gal there is. She’s in grad school at Boston University, and she moonlights as a major #BossBabe, running her own philanthropic organization. Her foundation, The With Certainty Project, works to support local musicians while also donating funds to important philanthropic causes. It’s super awesome to see a young philanthropist working for her community, and we feel lucky to have her as part of our vina community!

I caught up with Dima (despite our insane schedules), and we had a nice chat all about With Certainty, her fave emojis (duh), and Hey! Vina:

Emma: Hey Dima! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions for the VINAZINE. To start off, how old are you, and how are you currently spending your days?

Dima: Hey! I’m 21 years old, and I go to Boston University. I’m in my final year of grad school, studying occupational therapy with a minor in deaf studies. When I am not studying, I’m usually eating, watching Netflix, eating, working out, or queued up for a concert– but most likely eating. 🍟🍕🍉

I also began an organization in 2014, known as The With Certainty Project. The With Certainty Project aims to combine the talents of musicians with enthusiasm for philanthropy in order to promote artists and support worthy causes. It has been the best way for me to combine my love for human services with my love for music!

Wow! No wonder you’re so busy. I’m so happy you have time to use the app though. What’s excites you most about Hey! Vina?

After finishing undergrad, most of my friends left Boston so I decided that it was time to expand my social circle. Hey! Vina has given me that opportunity. I am all about women supporting women (~girl power~) so having a place to meet such diverse women and cultivate that support is awesome.

Right?! I love that too. What are your fave things to do with your vinas?

I love going out and exploring new places. I’ve definitely got the travel bug– whether it’s a weekend road trip or a EuroTrip, being able to experience a new culture, their food, and take photos is always super fun — especially when I get to do it with my vinas by my side!

Same. Traveling with our vinas is honestly just the best way to travel. Okay, now for the classic Hey! Vina questions: What 5 emojis best describe you?

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Definitely online shopping (though I usually just fill up my cart with an absurd amount of clothes, panic, and exit the page).

And last but definitely not least, what is your favorite thing about yourself?

I love that I am confident in who I am as a person.

Thanks Dima, we love that about you too! For our readers, you can find out more about The With Certainty Project on their website and connect with Dima on Instagram.

Not in Boston? Check out our other Meet Our Vina posts and download the app to meet your very own vina IRL!

Who run the world? Vinas! In our own busy world at VINA HQ, we have a new addition to our team who will be running our editorial and community programs, working (and werking) hard to create content for all things VINA.

Let’s get to know our chihuahua-loving queen of writing, Heidi:

Describe your idea of the perfect VINA date.

That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket. Miss Congeniality, anyone? Honestly, the perfect VINA date is one with a great view, a quiet space to talk and amazing company. I’m a big fan of museums, especially contemporary art. You can always follow up with another date and DIY modern art pieces of your own.

Which 5 emojis describe you best?

🍞🍞🍞🔑😂 (The key to life is carbs and a good sense of humor.)

Guilty pleasures?

Buying Pinterest-worthy plants and forgetting to water them. I’m not the most attentive plant mom, and succulents are more colicky than you think.

Favorite thing about yourself?

I am a champion of women everywhere. I was raised by strong women, and I believe in investing in female leadership. Oh, and I have great brows.

What excites you most about what we’re doing at VINA?

Hey! VINA is an app built by women for women to connect with other women. We know that making these relationships are so important, and we want to celebrate female friendships through technology. Can you imagine a world where you can access sisterhood with a swipe and a click? We can! We’re helping create that world at VINA HQ.

Can’t get enough of Team VINA? Connect with us on Instagram and Twitter for more VINA love and laughs.

As far as Chicago goes, there really isn’t a cooler city. Of course, if you live there you already know that! There’s so much to do on any given day that it can almost be overwhelming to pick something low-key to do with a new vina. We asked some of our fave Chi-town vinas for their go-to picks, so that you don’t have to. Check out their ideas below!

Even if you’re a Chicago native, sometimes and can be fun to go sight-seeing.  Play tourist and visit Cloud Gate (aka The Bean). Millennium Park is nice to walk around and get to know your new BFF, and The Bean gives you the PERFECT selfie opportunity. So grab your vina for a pic and don’t forget your selfie stick!

When was the last time you took a visit to the AIC? Our co-founder and CEO Olivia says that this is literally the best museum in the country, so take her advice and stop by! Right now, you can check out iconic contemporary masterpieces in their New Contemporary Exhibit or Aaron Siskind‘s awe-worthy abstract photography.

Did you know can go rock climbing at Millennium Park in the summer? Neither of you have to be an expert to go climbing, and a first Hey! VINA date is the perfect time to try something new. Cheer each other on or try racing to the top!

Nothing says Chicago like the absolute heaven that is Deep. Dish. Pizza. We know everyone has their favorite local joint, but how about returning to a classic like Giordano’s? Do me a favor, after bonding over the cheesy, saucy deliciousness, mail me a slice?

Speaking of pizza, nothing goes better with a hot slice than a cold brewski. That’s why Piece in Wicker Park is such a winner. Have one of their award-winning beers alongside delicious pizza. You really can’t go wrong.

For a first vina date, sometimes the best activity is simply grabbing a cup of joe. It lets you focus all your attention on getting to know your new friend. If you’re feeling fancy, try Gaslight Coffee Roasters for yummy coffee and treats. Plus, their really cute wall paper and tables make for A+ coffee instagrams. 😉

We were so busy working away making Hey! VINA better and better that we almost went through the day without realizing it was our 6 month App Store VINAversary! And we couldn’t let this amazing milestone slip by without a few #ladybrags and updates (and champagne, obvi).

While we’re in disbelief that it’s been 6 months, we’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re even more excited about what’s in store!

This is also going to be a great week for Hey! VINA updates — we’re finally releasing customizable profile photos! AND we’re inviting Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Richmond, Tucson, St. Louis, Baltimore, Columbus, and Las Vegas off the waitlist! Read the full list of active cities here, and if you’re not in an active area yet, read the ✌️VINAzine in the app for daily bits of inspiration, fun, and friendship tips!

Thanks for being part of our journey, and spreading the mission of community over competition and sisterhood above all else.

💕 Olivia & Jen

Boston is a city full of cool, diverse women – and there really is something for everyone.  Whether you’re a history buff, an art geek, a RedSox die-hard, or a major foodie, it’s not hard to find something up your alley.  But juuuussstttt in case you’re drawing a blank when trying to think of something for your first vina date, we’ve compiled a list of some must-have spots to get to know your new Boston bestie.

Impress Artsy Vinas @ the Institute of Contemporary Art

We all love the MFA and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, but if you’re looking for a culture fix that’s a little different, try the Institute of Contemporary Art in the Seaport district. It’s only one floor of art, which is perfect for your first vina-date. After checking out the current exhibits, make sure to check out the ah-mazing museum shop (the best-smelling candle I’ve ever purchased came from the ICA gift shop😻) and the café, which boasts an impressive mezze plate and delish coffee. Also, the ICA hosts tons of events throughout the year including dance parties, yoga classes, and popular chef demonstrations that would all be super fun to do with your vinas!

Nifty and Thrifty @ the Oliver Best Market

Let’s admit it – we ALL have a shopping problem. And what better people to enable us than our new vinas? Make a date to go to the Oliver Best Market in Allston. You’ll find tons of vintage goods and art from local vendors. After talking and checking out the goods for a little bit, try this exercise: give yourselves a budget of $10-$20 and 15 minutes to find something to buy for each other! Each of you will end up with something great at the end, plus you both may realize you already know each other better than you thought.

Get Your Grub On @ the Boston Public Market

If you haven’t checked out the new Boston Public Market, you’re in for a treat. It’s basically a foodie’s heaven, complete with a craft beer stand, vegan donuts, and the best hot chocolate you will ever have (trust me). Not to mention the countless farm-fresh cheese, meat, and produce vendors. It’s the perfect first vina date because it gives you plenty of time to talk and get to know each other as you roam the stands and figure out what to eat. May I suggest…everything?

Selfie Queens on the Esplanade

This time of year, the Esplanade is the nicest place to spend some time outdoors, especially because it’s about 100% less touristy than the Commons. During the Summer, the college kids are gone and the locals come out to play. There are endless possibilities for things to do down by the Charles: pack a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a swim á la BU’s Dean Elmore*, or take selfies on one of the docks – it’s sure to be a good time!

*not actually recommended – brrrr! 💦❄️💦❄️💦❄️

What are you fave hangouts in Boston? Let us know in the comments below!

If anyone knows how overwhelming it can seem to make new friends after moving to a new city, it’s me. I’m probably the luckiest gal in the world that I work for VINA 👯 now, and I’m loving it. But that meant leaving all my friends in Boston behind and moving back to my hometown of San Francisco. As the saying goes, I definitely left my ❤️ in SF, but it seems like a lot of my old pals have moved away! I was nervous to leave the girls who had become my heart and soul on the East Coast and basically start from scratch in Norcal.

In my opinion, making friends in college is a breeze compared to making friends as a Real Life Adult. In college, we meet people we instantly click with in student groups, classes, and in the dorms. When we leave it can be harder to find a community to settle into, let alone a smaller trusted group you can really let your freak flag fly with.

For you ladies in the same position as me: have no fear!  We can totally do this.  In fact, I’ve already started and I’ve met some amazing women.  I’ve collected tips, tricks, and motivational tools for getting out there and finding your SQUAD. Are you ready?

Le duhhh! It only makes sense that you’ll bond with the people you see every day, plus they’re passionate about the same thing you’re passionate about! Women who are at the same level as you can become amazing friends. You may also find a mentor in one of your superiors. If you do, don’t let that opportunity slip away. I’ve already learned so much from my amazing superiors, and there’s still so much more professional and general life knowledge to soak up from them! Finding women in the workplace to look up to and learn from is truly priceless.

Chances are, there are other gals who like doing the same things you like doing. The hard part is finding them. Do you have a hobby? Crafting? Sports? Drinking wine? 🍷😉 Find a group of people who are already doing those things together, and join up! There are tons of recreational groups in every city, and they’re filled with people who enjoy your hobby too. Check local rec centers, hobby shops, and gyms for public groups you can join!

This might seem counter-productive, but trust me –  one of the best ways to meet new people is to just Get. Out. There. Even if you’re alone.  I’m talking solo coffee dates, going to the movies stag, seeing bands, museum visits, shopping, working out, taking a class, going for a hike, even going to dinner ALONE.

When you’re by yourself, you’re putting yourself in a situation to be super approachable! You just have to be open to it and a little bit proactive. The key 🔑  is finding other people who are alone and chatting them up. It may be intimidating, but going out alone is more common than you think. The worst that can happen if you try to talk to someone is that they aren’t interested – it’s not personal, and you’ve put yourself out there! Which is a huge achievement and that’s all that matters.

I swear on mine and every cute puppy’s life: I am not just saying this because I work for VINA.  The Hey! VINA app is simply just a really, really awesome way to meet new friends. I’ve been using it since it first arrived in Boston, and I’ll use it forever, probably. The cool part is that every single vina on the app has already made a personal pledge to meet new people! So there’s no pressure – just find someone you think you might click with and meet up! Try organizing a vina meet-up with a few friends from the app – you’ll find your new squad in no time.

I would looove for this to turn into an ongoing dialogue. Comment below your story and/or any tips you’ve collected on your journey to meeting new people when you’re new in town! 👯😻

If you know us here at VINA, you know we love a good food-themed national holiday. Today is National French Fry Day, so we have a fry-themed Instagram Roundup just for you. After reading, make sure you go out and grab some fries with your vinas!

@claarterose enjoyed some fries from In-N-Out, having them animal style like a true California girl should.

In Atlanta? @fredsmeatbread has AH-MAZING fries (and burgers – yum!)

@thenovelmillennial knows you don’t share an order of fries with your vinas – you buy them their own order 😉

“Fries and shine” should be everyone’s motto IMO (via @urbanebloc)

And I might have had a little bit of fun with some ketchup and fries too…;)

If you go for some fried potato goodness with your gals, make sure to use the hashtag #withmyvinas so we can see!! 🍟❤️
