Raise your hand if you’ve ever looked at yourself in the mirror and didn’t like the reflection looking back at you. Or maybe, you were OK with the reflection, but you were still picking out a list of things that could make it better. Well, sadly, that’s totally normal. We are our biggest critics. Whether you think your dimples aren’t deep enough or there is not enough room between your thighs, you are perfect the way you are. And it’s time to accept that.
When I was growing up, I was known for having the biggest, brightest smile in the room. I could never wipe it off my face. It wasn’t until someone told me that I needed braces that everything changed. From that point on, I looked at myself differently. “I do have an interesting set of teeth,” I noticed. I began to compare my teeth to other people’s and it dawned on me that I shouldn’t be smiling as much because if I did, they would all see my crooked teeth.
So, I got braces. Finally I was closer than ever to having the straight, even teeth that would make my smile perfect. No one could tell me my teeth weren’t beautiful now. Even when people made fun of me or called me names when I was growing up, I continued to smile. Why? Because it took too much energy to be angry or upset. I saw the beauty in myself and no one could take that away from me.
WHOSE OPINION MATTERS MORE: YOUR OWN OPINION OR OTHER’S OPINIONS ABOUT YOU?
For those of you whose inner voice isn’t always as nice, remember who you are! If someone around you is making you feel less beautiful and less special than you are, remember that there’s a fire inside you. That gorgeous soul of yours was created for a reason; a true purpose to do great things—big and small. Now say these words:
I AM ONE OF A KIND AND I ACCEPT WHO I AM. NO MATTER WHAT.
There are still so many things that I am self-conscious about, but I will not let that shake me. I am able to accept myself, my so-called “flaws” and all. I am beautiful the way I am.
