There are women out there who are proud of the fact that they only hang out with men; those who boast that female friendships are too full of drama and that they just can’t deal with other women.
I do not identify with that sentiment at all for many reasons. The first being that “girl talk” (those private conversations between you and your best vinas) is absolutely important in all of our lives. There have been countless times when only the company and advice of a trusted vina would do, and this is why I value my friendships with women so much.
Girl talk isn’t just sipping wine and gossiping about sex and relationships. It’s a safe space where I can feel free to admit my insecurities and my faults to another. Someone who I trust won’t judge me and who can understand what I’m going through, in a way that no one else can. These friends and listeners obviously don’t have to have been born with female anatomy, they just have to be those silly somebodies who love you and can appreciate whatever topic you decide needs discussing. Don’t get me wrong – I value my male friendships too, but there are some experiences that most men just won’t get, just because they’ve never been through it themselves.

Girl talk can be about anything. In my experience, we have definitely covered gossip and relationships, but we also talk about everything from current events, to waxing, to Harry Potter. We talk about the latest memes being shared on social media, and we talk about our kids (or fur babies), and yes, we talk about other people whom we may or may not like, but you can create a safe space with your true vinas and no one will break that trust. And sometimes it doesn’t really matter what you’re saying, as long as you know you have someone to listen and who will always give you a piece of her mind if necessary (when necessary).
So raise a glass, and toast your vinas! As I’ve gotten older and my life (as well as my friends’ lives) has gotten busier, I’ve found that making time for girl talk has become more and more important to me. I absolutely treasure it.
