ARE YOU THE TIBBY OF YOUR FRIEND GROUP THIS SUMMER?

How to make the most of a summer at home, even if all of your friends are away.

Tibby is definitely the most relatable character in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. And I think we can all agree that she wins the “Sassiest Personality” award. While her best friends are off at a Mexican soccer camp, enjoying a Greek romance, and heck, even visiting family in another state, Tibby is stuck in her hometown shelving store inventory.

It happens to most of us at some point, whether we simply don’t have family to visit in exciting countries or our big vacation plans fall through due to flaky friends. Here’s what you can do to make the best of it!

TRY SOMETHING NEW EVERY WEEK

Make yourself a mini-bucket list that only contains things you’ve never done before. You can get your ideas from anywhere – movies, people you admire, the local recreation center class catalog.

It may not seem significant as you go along during the summer, but when you write down everything new you tried in September, you’ll definitely be impressed with how much you accomplished.

PICK UP A NEW HOBBY OR SET A GOAL

Up your nail art game. Learn how to make Thai food so you don’t have to blow all your pocket money on takeout. Figure out how to weave baskets.

A goal can be to read a book a week, or to run a 10k. Who’s gonna be more in shape, super athlete you or your friend who’s been munching macarons in the cobblestoned streets of a tiny French town all summer long?

MAKE NEW FRIENDS

Forget what Drake said – new friends can be great, and they can come from unlikely places. They don’t have to be in the same age bracket or lead a life that’s similar to ours. All you really need is good conversation and a common interest, and you have the foundation to strike up an enjoyable friendship.

You can meet fellow dog lovers at the dog park or even befriend the seniors while visiting an assisted living home! Consistency is key, according to Shasta Nelson, author of Friendships Don’t Just Happen. She says it can take six to eight experiences with someone before you feel like you’ve made a friend.

CATCH UP WITH OLD FRIENDS

We all know how easy it can be to fall out of touch with an old friend for no reason other than both parties being too busy to reach out. Luckily, this is easy to fix! Be the initiator. Reach out to a couple of old friends and plan a little reunion (who could say no to Taco Tuesday?!) or just do a quick Skype/coffee catchup.

You’ll glean 10x as much out of a quick conversation than simply waiting to see what comes up on their social media feeds that you can like. Catching up with an old friend can feel like the fast track to feeling fulfilled.

PLAN A WEEKEND GETAWAY

Just because your passport isn’t getting any use doesn’t mean you have to stay still. If you’ve got a car and a full tank of gas, you’re only limited by your creativity. With the right people, a weekend escape can be even more fun than a summer spent on the other side of the globe.
