HOW-TO GUIDE: BE AN AMAZING MAID OF HONOR

Make being the Maid of Honor a piece of (wedding) cake with these simple tricks.

If you’ve seen 27 Dresses, you know just how much of a time commitment, expense, and responsibility being a bridesmaid is, much less being the Maid of Honor. But, in the end it’s all worth it because we know when we’re the ones headed down the aisle, our vinas will drop everything to do the same for us.

Here are five easy tips to help you be as good of a Maid of Honor as Jane Nichols (but without the sketchy newspaper article and tacky gowns, hopefully):

ACTUALLY COMMUNICATE WITH THE BRIDESMAIDS

Yeah, chances are, you were the bride’s friend first, but you still need to work as best you can with the other bridesmaids. Whether there are two or 10, be cognizant of their schedules, hear our their ideas for events like the bridal shower and bachelorette party, and always fill them in as soon as any important decisions are made.

FIGURE OUT FINANCES ASAP

Again, this requires reaching out to the rest of the bridal party. Individually discuss with each bridesmaid her budget. Maybe the bachelorette party won’t be the Vegas trip you’d envisioned, but at least all the bride’s vinas will be there. And don’t forget to manage your own money. Your love for your friend might be deeper than your pocket, and that’s okay!

BE THERE

Yes, be there for dress shopping and the wedding appointments and the bridal shower, if you can. That goes without saying. But you need to be there physically and emotionally. When she’s feeling overwhelmed or anxious, you’re the one who’s supposed to be there for your BFF turned Bridezilla.

PRIORITIZE THE BRIDE

This is the day you two have been dreaming about since you were kids, but remember, she’s the leading lady this time around. This isn’t a chance to show off how on-the-ball you are (okay, maybe a little) but rather, a chance to give the friend of a lifetime the experience of a lifetime. Make sure what she wants, she gets (even if it means no strippers!).

UNDERSTAND YOUR WORK DOESN’T STOP AT THE WEDDING

There are tons of odds and ends that need to be taken care of day-of. Sounds ridiculous, but offer to go to the bathroom with the bride whenever she needs; those dresses can create some real problems on the pot. Help corral the bridal party and family for photos. Make sure the bride is drinking in between each glass of champagne, has tissues readily available, and the list goes on and on and on.
