At any stage in life, homesickness can be a battle. From a bright-eyed college freshman, to a 30-something with a recent city change, to a newly retired vina with more time than she knows what to do with, it’s an experience that plagues the lives of almost everyone at least once in their lifetime.
The truth is, cycles of life change can be, and usually are, very hard. When we find ourselves uprooted from the predictability of our daily lives, no matter how prepared we may have thought ourselves to be, it can be paralyzing. Homesickness, however common, is a very real issue that can lead to depression and anxiety if left unchecked.
Luckily, there is often a solution.
The quickest fix to feeling lonely? Surround yourself with friends. Yes, I know, nothing new, but certainly, tried and true. A girl gang of motivated, compassionate, and supportive women may not fill the homesick hole in your heart immediately or fully, but it makes the days easier and helps you to explore this new stage of your life with a support system to fall back on.
On those days when all you want to do is curl up in bed, look at pictures from home, and cry, reach out to your group of gals. Chances are, at least one of them is going through something similar. Together, you can get your mind off of home and find something productive and distracting to do.
You’ll be surprised when the more you do this, the more you start to love this new life cycle you’re in. Home is always home, but life is about forward change.
