The past year (and semester) is gone, and now a whole new one begins. Although, it may still be a bit chilly, Spring is when the weather starts to get warmer, and hopefully sunnier. Those sunny days and the summer season may start calling your name, but here are a few reasons why Spring Semester is so much better than Fall Semester.
NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS
Sometimes students and teachers like to philosophize that the start of Spring Semester also means the start of the New Year, because technically it is. Spring semester or quarter, generally begins in mid-late January. People can use their Fall Semester as a guide of what worked for them and what didn’t work and bring those notes into Spring to make it a better semester.
YOU KNOW THE LAY OF THE LAND
Unfortunately, transfer students might still feel new coming into Spring Semester, but at least in every class someone might be in the same boat.
For returning students, they are no longer questioning which route is the fastest to a certain building or how long it will take them to get there. They will also know which coffee spot tastes better or is cheaper, and which is the fastest to make your drink. There will always be nerves starting your first day as possibly the teachers and faces all change, but generally you’ll see a few familiar ones.
READY TO JOIN UP
Now that you’re familiar with the campus and got the feel of what college is about, if you have time, join an organization! Rush week lasts about two to three weeks and it gives you a chance to get to know the people in the organization and hang out with them before making a commitment. They range from Greek orgs to volunteer orgs to clubs. Joining an org is also a great way to make new friends and an everlasting bond. Positions in orgs will also look good on a resume and give you some experience in certain fields such as administrative, secretarial, planning, etc.
SPRING BREAK, HEYYYY!
Spring Semester also means a week of Spring Break. I generally, like to get whatever school work out of the way so that I can actually enjoy my break. Even if you’re stuck working through break or not going home, not traveling, you can use the week to catch up on sleep, shows, movies, and friends!
I went to San Francisco State and although you can apply to graduate for either semester, the school only holds one graduation ceremony, and that is in the Spring. Plus, the weather is usually nicer and for graduating vinas, you won’t be freezing cold in a dress!
And word of advice:
Have a great semester and don’t forget to eat, drink coffee, and sleep! The essentials of college life. Good luck vinas!!
