If the time has come when you’re off and living on your own for the very first time, congrats! You’re kind of, sort of, almost an adult. 😉 If you’re living in the dorms, chances are you have a roommate (or multiple roommates), as well as a whole flock of floormates. If you want to be everyone’s best vina EVER and win over your whole dorm, we have some tried and true tips. (Or more like almost everyone in your dorm – hey, you can’t please them all.)
OPEN DOOR POLICY
The absolute best way to meet people on your floor is to leave your bedroom door open when you’re not sleeping or changing. Everyone will be wandering around, checking out each other’s rooms, and saying hey! If you’re door is always closed, you’ll be missing out. If you have an open door policy, you’ll open up opportunities for new friendships.
CHILL IN THE COMMON ROOM
Very similar to the open door policy. If you hang in the common room, you’re bound to become friendly with the other kids on your floor. You can do your coursework in there or plan a movie night with your roomies (while you’re at it, invite others to join as they browse by)!

LOWER THE VOLUME
One surefire way to make sure everyone doesn’t dislike you is to be conscious of annoying habits or actions. Don’t play your music too loud. Avoid preparing super pungent food in your microwave (during my freshman year, our floor smelled like burnt popcorn the entire second semester 😷). If you have a kitchen, remember to wash your dishes! Being a considerate floor-mate will go a long way to helping you maintain friendships.
ALL THE SNACKS
I mean… who wouldn’t want to be BFFs with the vina who always has yummy snacks in her room?
