Whether traveling in a group or traveling alone, staying at hostels is the most affordable and most fun option for lodging (in my opinion). Shared rooms, hosted events, and an in-house bar are just some of the ways that hostels foster the perfect environment for meeting other travelers and locals.
CHAT UP THE STAFF
Young and old, people who work at hostels are usually some of the most outgoing, friendly, and helpful people you’ll meet during your travels. Their job is literally all about meeting people, taking groups on guided tours, and giving travelers tips about their home city. They are easy to talk to because it’s their job to make your stay wondrous and they generally love helping travelers. Ask them where they like to go out on their nights off – maybe they’ll invite you along. 😉
GO TO THE BAR
Many hostels in metropolitan cities have a communal area with a bar. Bars are notoriously great places to meet other people. While chatting and drinking, you’re guaranteed to meet some cool travel buddies.

EAT A COMMUNAL MEAL
Many hostels also offer communal, family-style meals in their common areas at least once a day. Not only is this a great way to save some $$ (it’s often included in the price of your bed), but it’s also a great place to meet friends while chowing down.
TAKE A GUIDED TOUR
If your hostel offers guided tours of the city that you’re visiting, take advantage! Like the communal meals, these tours are often included in the price of your bed and are usually led by one of the friendly hostel staff. Join a tour, meet some fellow travelers, and see the sights!

TALK TO YOUR ROOMIES
Chances are you’ll be sharing a room with at least one other person and in many cases with several other people. Get to know your roomies, and find pals for day excursions, tours, and meals!
